Timo Swiel on bench? Here we go Stormers!

April 8, 2013 in Uncategorized

Elton Jantjies has not made it! Do I blame him solely for the Stormers position on the log? No, but we are missing Peter Grant and Jantjies is overrated. The Stormers are in that position because they have a tough draw, it was obvious from the start.

I’m not even going to use injuries to Schalk Burger, Juan de Jongh and Eben Etsebeth etc as excuses. The Stormers have enough depth to over come that. Look at how great the Cheetahs are performing. They are exciting and play with much more freedom than any other side. Will they make the play-offs? I still have my doubts.

Anyhow, what really excites me is the possible inclusion of Timo Swiel on the Stormers becnch. Finally! He is in the same class as Johan Goosen. Take Goosen and mix him with Michael du Plessis or Stephen Larkham…that’s how highly I rate this young man. It annoys me that Allister Coetzee didn’t involve him from the start. In Australia or New Zealand he would have played Super15 last year already.

The Stormers will have to beat the Sharks this weekend. Can they? For sure.

Put your Balls on the Guillotine! (my picks in bold)

Highlanders vs Brumbies

Chiefs vs Reds

Blues vs Hurricanes

Rebels vs Kings

Force vs Crusaders

Stormers vs Sharks

Bulls vs Cheetahs

  1. Brumbies, Chiefs, Hurricanes, Kings, Crusaders, Stormers, Cheetahs

  2. Seems it might be Kurt Coleman on the bench or one of the scrummies. Swiel has been playing of the bench in the Vodacom Cup behind van Aswegen and Coleman

  3. Baylion, I hope they pick Swiel ahead of Coleman. It’s almost time to go big or go home. How did Timo go in Vodacom Cup?

  4. Can’t tell you, I didn’t watch the Vodacom Cup games that he played. He didn’t play last weekend as he was pulled to Bloem for in case Jantjies couldn’t play but Coleman was the first choice.

Welkom terug, waar was jy. Het my nou onverhoeds betrap, sal my mening spoedig pos.

  8. I wont totaly agree with the remark that Jantjies is overrated, because I stil believe the Stormers Coaching team is the reason for Jantjies inconsistent performances. Look at the Chiefs and Brumbies game, how he dominated the play and how he put players in space and created tries. I still believe in the fact that we as the Stormers are playing 40 minute rugby, We look to build a lead and than once we managed to have a lead of 10+ points we go dead, dead, dead..I believe that theor needs to be structure in a gameplan but to a certain extend. I still believe Jantjies should be allowed to play with freedom and to be allowed to play the situation. You cant have a flyhalf like jantjies and Joe Petersen is the 1st reciever. I think we busy killing his career and I am honest allow Carel Du Plessis 2 weeks with Jantjies as his backline coach and mentor you will see the difference. Let the guy play his natural ball game.. With his natural atacking game he will bring Aplon and De Jongh more into the game.. All I am asking of you Allistar and Fleck…

Its always a pleasure reading your blog Kev.. Respect brother

  9. Highlanders
    Chiefs
    Canes
    Rebels
    Crusaders
    Sharks
    Bulls

  10. I believe the Hurricanes are the best side in the tournament on form right a the moment, but think Chiefs are still tournament favourites.

  11. My spies down in the western Cape tell me that Swiel is rated for moments of brilliance but he makes really bad decisions at times and because of that could not hold down the flyhalf berth for WP u20 on a full-time basis, playing some games a fullback.

  12. time will tell!

  13. Dankie, was met vakansie.

  14. thanks mate. I totally agree with your Prince idea. Fleck hasn’t done anything with the Stormers backline in years! the thing is that the opponents run into Jantjes channel the whole time and that takes him out of the game. I will give that it is also difficult for jantjes playing with two new no.9’s and two different centres. he is a convidence player and due to his poor form with the boot, the Stormers lost the first 2 games,

  15. Czardas, I’m sure Michael du Plessis also made heaps of mistakes. Dont restrict him! Let him play, coach and guide him. He will learn by playing and its time to test him. Brilliance win you World Cups!

  16. you also back Highlanders? if they drop me this week…

  17. The Highlanders are too good a team to keep losing week in week out; they are at home and I have a feeling the Brumbies may have peaked.

  18. Kev,
I am a huge fan of allowing brilliance and flair some latitude to make mistakes, the thing is if his flair does not outweigh his brainfarts at u20 level then it is unlikely to do so in the cauldron of Super rugby.

  19. Wait, wait, you’re choosing landers over the Brumbies and Stormers over the Sharks? Dodgy picks there mate

  20. I can’t believe this guys skills – and he sits benched on a vodacom cup side – well now…….we have only ourselves to blame if he runs north or worse overseas…….

    My picks :

    Highlanders
    Chiefs
    Blues
    Kings
    Crusaders
    Stormers
    Cheetahs

Sharks hasn’t impressed me last friday, the Stormers must keep an eye on Du Toit, the 2013 Etzebeth. Also a very good head to head : Deon Fourie vs Kyle Cooper.
Cheetahs can do it even in the Loftus.
The Blues to win by more than 12.

  22. Count, I’v been saying the same thing for weeks and every time they prove me wrong. Went with the Brumbies this week and it will be just my luck that the Clan show they can finish plays :( :)

  23. Brumbies
    Chiefs
    Hurricanes
    Kings ( I’m afraid too say )
    Crusaders
    Sharks
    Cheetahs

    3) Varsity Skuld verloor teen CUT.
    4) Varsity jnrs, Maties kry sleg pak teen Tuks.
    5) Varsity, Maties verniel deur Tuks.
    6) Vodacom, gelykop teen Boland, verloor teen Sharks (Nuweland),wen darem laaste twee wedstryde nadat Dobson Super 15 spelers nader trek.
Brumbies, Chiefs, Canes, Kings, Saders, Stormers, Bulls.

Taute was teleurstellend.

    Picks
    Highlanders
    Chiefs
    Canes
    Kings
    Saders
    Stormers
    Bulls

  26. Agree 110% with you.

  27. With Czardas not with myself, lol!

Joe Pietersen, Damian de Allende, Juan de Jongh, Jean de Villiers (capt), Gio Aplon, Gary van Aswegen, Dewaldt Duvenage, Duane Vermeulen, Michael Rhodes, Siya Kolisi, Andries Bekker, De Kock Steenkamp, Frans Malherbe, Deon Fourie, Steven Kitshoff.
Replacements: Martin Bezuidenhout, Pat Cilliers, Gerbrandt Grobler, Nizaam Carr, Louis Schreuder, Kurt Coleman, Cheslin Kolbe.

  29. Kev,
I note that the Stormers have indeed included a young exciting backline payer on the bench because they believe he has the “x-factor”.

Unfortunately for you it is not your kid Swiel, but instead they have named nineteen year old Cheslin Kolbe. He is only 1.70m and 70kgs but is apparently a handful on attack.

  31. Thanks for that info Czardas, please keep us around the world informed about those youngsters we can see.

  34. Oh my word I took a pasting on superbru, was 0 from 6 till the last game !

  35. haha, I’m not doing any better. 37/52 on the Aussieboer ladder!
