NZ Cavaliers’ captain dies

In 1986 the NZ Cavaliers, a rebel tour, came to the Republic. This unofficial tour came as the official All Black tour of 1985 was cancelled mainly due to Apartheid. Twenty eight of the thirty elected All Blacks to tour SA in 1985 came to get beaten 3-1 in the unofficial tests, by the legend, Naas Botha’s, mighty Springboks. This Green & Gold team had stars like Uli Schmidt, Gert Smal, Garth Wright, Danie Gerber, Johan Heunis and the du Plessis brothers, Michael and Carel.
Andy Dalton was the appointed captain, however, after Burger Geldenhuys, cowardly hit him from behind in the Blue Bulls game, he was out of the tour with a broken jaw. Geldenhuys said he ‘paid Dalton back’ for what happened at the previous maul, however, years later it was said that it was Andy Hayden who punched Geldenhuys at that maul and not Dalton.
Dok Craven then gave the order that Geldenhuys (he was a clear choice) must not be picked for the Boks and that lead to Wahl Bartman’s test debut.
Jock Hobbs, to over the captaincy role for the unofficial tests. Hobbs was also chairman of NZ Rugby and one of the main ‘drivers’ of the NZ World Cup in 2011.
Hobbs succeeded another All Black captain, Graham Maurie, and made his test debut in 1983 against the British Lions.
His moment where he handed All Black captain Richie McCaw, the ‘holy grail’, reminds of when Muhammed Ali opened the Olympic Games. Nervous, but, glorious moments in sport.
Hobbs died at 52 years, yesterday. RIP Jock!

Kevin, I see in your post, you have me picking both the Reds and Sharks, how about while editing that you change my cheetahs pick to Rebels, I’ve changed my mind a few times this week, but like I said in my post, I’ve decided on going for one SA win this weekend(Stormers)
