Australia: the BEST sport nation!

September 30, 2010 in Uncategorized

Australia is the best sport nation in the world. With a population of just over 21 million, they are by far, the most talented country and the most passionate ‘all’ sport fans.

100 016 AFL (or gAyFL to most rugby fans) fans have to do the whole final all over on Saturday after Collingwood and St Kilda ended up in a draw last Saturday at the MCG. Only the 3rd time in history. Yes, for sure it is one of the most silliest things to comeback and reply the final. This time, they will have extra time if it ends in a draw. It will also bring in an extra A$19 million to the AFL. It is not my cup of tea, but, I must admitt that, although it looks like men in undies playing with a bar of wet soap, it was pretty tense in the last quater.

On Sunday is the Rugby League final in Sydney. They expect more than 90 000 fans at the game between the Sydney Roosters vs St George.

USA might dominate the Olympic Games and are the kings and queens of individual sports, however, when it comes to team sports, there is no better than the Aussies.

They have won World Cups in Rugby Union, Rugby League, Cricket and Netball. They qualified for the last two Soccer World Cups. They have good golfers, swimmers, surfers and tennis players. They predict to win more than 50 medals at the Commom Wealth Games in India. Aussie hockey (men and woman) and netball are top notch.

New Zealand, can also be proud. With a population of +4 million, they are the best Rugby Union team, no debate. They are the current Rugby League and Female Rugby World Champs and the only country not to have lost a game at the SWC 2010. They are competitive in cricket, especially the shorter version and also top in sevens on most occassions. Thei netballers are the only team to beat the Aussies on occassions.

Proooovince will slaughter Bulls!

September 30, 2010 in Uncategorized

It is ‘civil war’, SA style, time again! North vs South! The ulitmate rugby game is still, the clash between the mighty All Blacks and the Springboks. In SA, however, the Blue Bulls vs WP, is still the ultimate Currie Cup encounter. It was SA’s test rugby during isolation.

WP, should beat the Blue Bulls on Saturday, even though the game is in the ‘Dutchmen Fortress’! The Bulls are without more Springboks than Proooovince. The presence of Jean de Villiers and his combination with Juan de Jongh, will be the biggest threat to the Bulls. Guthro Steenkamp and Francois Hougaard (the SA stars of the season so far) will add some extra fuel and this will be WP’s biggest test again; will they stand up to win the battle upfront?

Bok places up for grabs: Conrad Jantjes vs Zane Kircher, Gio Aplon and Gerhard van den Heever, Dewald Potgieter (on bench) vs Flo, will create enough interest for the Bok coaching staff to watch.

The bulls at Loftus, is a herd with different horns and it won’t be easy, however, I have a feeling….hie kom ‘n ding, a lekka-lekka Province ding! PROOOOVINCE by 13 against the Blue Bulls!

Vote on poll what you think.

My other predictions in ‘bold’:

Sharks by 25 vs Leopards

Pumas vs Griquas by 10

Cheetahs vs Lions by 3

PS: Best rugby news this week, Willem de Waal will not play for the Stormers next season. De Waal is off to Italy after the Currie Cup season! Halleluja!

According to your votes, Jean de Villiers should captain the Boks on the end of year Grand Slam tour:

Rugby: a game for men, women and moffies

September 27, 2010 in Uncategorized

Woman should be barefoot, pregnant and in the kitchen! The day woman received voting rights, was the worst betrayal since the day that Judas dobbed in Jesus. Your grandmother and mother will proably remember those days.

How the world has changed. After a few bras were burnt, females finally took their place on the world stage!

Or have they? Is the world still sexsist?

Female rugby has only really started to pick up in the last decade in the Republic. In NZ, England and Australia it get much more coverage. If you watched the RWC 2010 a few weeks ago, one realises that this form of the game has not developed enough in the Republic. Money, sponsorship and the lack of a open minded support by the public, are still very evident.

Matt Giteau’s sister, Kirsty Giteau, also represented the Wallaroos at the recent RWC for woman. The skill of the England, NZ and Aussies were amazing. South Africa was taught a valuable rugby lesson during that tournament. Those Protea-mamas were too fat and too slow for the high tempo game plan of their competitors! Sounds like the John Smit-syndrome!

Too watch the BEST rugby cover tackle ever, by Nicole Beck, go to link below! You also see the brilliant speed, foot work, rugby intelligence of how Fiona Pocock changes the ball from one arm to another to hand-off the tackler. The overrated Bryan Habana, could go and learn from these girls.

Sydney put in a bid for the first Gay Rugby World Tournament! Wonder is Sea Point did the same?

Is there a place for female rugby? (vote on poll)

Would you let your wife/girlfriend/daughter play rugby?

Luke Watson should lead Boks for Grand Slam tour?

September 23, 2010 in Uncategorized

With John Smit out due to a neck operation (blessing in disguise), Victor Matfield apparently not going, who should lead the Springboks on their Grand Slam tour at the end of the year?

Juan Smith, seems to be in the inside lane. Schalk Burger did a good job with the Stormers, while Jean de Villiers is  a natural leader.

Luke Watson should be considered. He is a great leader, player (much better no.8 than Showpony Spies and a better fetcher than FLO) and as he is currently playing in England; he knows their players. The only reason why Luke won’t be considered, is that there are too many Boks who’s dads are part of the ‘old regime’, enemies of Cheeky Watson?

Another option is Big Joe van Niekerk, currently playing in France.

Vote on poll who you think should lead the Boks for that tour.

Most SA provinces were ‘throwing’ big money to obtain the services of Bjorn Basson for next year. Is he that good?

Let’s assume that Habana, JP and Aplon will be Snor’s choices for the World Cup. Who should be the fourth winger?

Vote on poll.

The results of the Best Fullback Ever poll:

Christian Cullen 10 34.48%
Andre Joubert 8 27.59%
Jason Robinson 5 17.24%
JPR Williams 3 10.34%
Serge Blanco 1 3.45%

If your name is Morne….

September 22, 2010 in Uncategorized

If your name is Morne, you were probably born in the seventies or eighties! You are in your 30’s or 40’s. Just ask Snakedoctor.

Honestly, before Morne du Plessis, die Koning kaptein van die Kaapkontrei, I have never heard the name before. It was a very popular thing to name your kids after your heroes. My brother, born in 1974, only became Morne (my dad’s favourite captain) because Pierre Fourie lost his title fight against Bob Foster. Mum was still pregnant with ‘Pierre’, but, after that loss, my dad said, “no Pierre anymore, he will be named Morne”.

Another name that became very popular was Divan, named after the little Cape general.

Thank God, Naas didn’t take over! Wonder if Naas Olivier was named after Nancy, the Blue Bulls legend?

The way Super Cooper is performing this year, expect heaps of Quade’s over the next few years!

Here are a few testers for you. Try/guess without Mr Google ;-)!

Who are the following?

Frederick Christoffel Hendrik [Springbok forward 60-70’s]- Frik du Preez

Reginal Dwight [music] – Elton John

Norma Jean [actress] – Marilyn Monroe

Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou [music] – George Michael

Johannes Lodewikus [Springbok forward 60-70’s] - Mof Myburgh

Farrokh Bulsara [music]- Freddie Mercury

My name means kind and gentle. Seeing that I was an officer in the Army, I’m an officer and a gentleman. Unfortunately, I’m also a scorpio!

Who are you named after?

What does your name mean?

Who were your heroes?

All Time Best Rugby XV- the Fullback

September 21, 2010 in Uncategorized

Something I started om my afrikaans blog, a few years ago, but, never finished it; so I thought I will test the ‘experts’ on Sport24 for their opinions and finish the job.

Scenario: pick an All Time Best Rugby Union XV.

My team and the bloggers team will be compared to Martin Johnson and Bill McClarens’ teams. I try to pick the best of each country if they are up with the best.

My personal preference in a fullback:

Player with speed, vision, great anticpation, reliable hands, above average kicking skills, excellent positional play and must be a rock on defense. That’ why Serge Blanco, a brilliant attacking fullback, won’t make my ‘All Time Team’, as his defense was poor!

Name Team Era Positional play Antici-pation Distribution- skills Defense Foot work Line kicks Attacking approach High ball skills Kicking – both feet BMT Total

Islamic terrorists will target the Commonwealth Games!

September 20, 2010 in Uncategorized

Muslim extremists struck again with another attack in New Dehli and threatened that they will target the CWG. The Commonwealth Games are kicking off in less than 2 weeks and with the Australian Anti-terrorist Agency stating that there is a 80% change of terrorists attacks during the games, some athletes are reconsidering if they should still take the chance. Matt Wills, former Olympic and Commonwealth gold winner, said he would not go if he was in this situation.

When are these Muslim terrorist going stop these cowardly attacks?

What are these extremists real problem with non-Muslim countries or people?

Is the Commonwelath games pass its ‘sellbye date’ with all the World Cups and Olympic Games the ultimate for athletes?

Would you still go to India for the games is you were an athlete?

John Smit is better than Captain Kirk!

September 16, 2010 in Uncategorized

Statistics are sometimes great, however, never tells the full story. Polls done on the 5 star Wallabokiwi-blogs Wink, over the last week, has shown that John Smit is the best rugby union captain of all time! Yes, readers, not just the best in SA, the best the world has ever seen!

It is a bit of a preference and guessing thing, as none of us has never been in a team of those that were nominated? Did John win because the votes came from mostly Bok fans?

John Smit

Morne du Plessis

Sean Fitzpatrick

What do I look for in a captain?

1: He must be a role model on and off the field.

2: He must know the laws of the game.

3: He must be well-spoken on and off the field.

4: He must be able to make critical decisions on the field when acquired.

5: HE MUST BE THE BEST PLAYER IN THAT POSITION!

John Smit has done Springbok rugby proud! I, however, won’t pick him as the best captain of all time because of point 5. He is not even my best Bok captain.

My ranking would be:

1:Morne du Plessis 2: Sean Fitzpatrick 3: Martin Johnson

4:Richie MCCaw 5:John Smit

Other captains I rate:

John Eales, Jean de Villiers, Victor Matfield and Luke Watson!

Vote for the best modern day cricket captain on new poll.

PS: some rugby news from NZ – NZ Herald: Trinations 2010

Best player- Richie McCaw
Best “new cap” – F Hougaard
Longest Face – Rocky Elsom (lol!)
Biggest clown – Bakkies Botha
Kick of the series – Beale in Bloem vs Bokke
Biggest disappointment – Pierre Spies
“The man is a Lion, as long as the opposition are baby gnu, abandoned by their mothers on the Serengeti. Make it an even fight and Spies doesn’t want to know”
Biggest disappointing moment of the series – John Smit losing in his 100th test

Plonker – PDV
Best tackle – Cory Jane on Turner in Sydney.

The truth is in the pudding!

September 15, 2010 in Uncategorized

As anticipated, there were not enough rugby comments made to the previous two blogs. Most probably due to a lack of knowledge…..

However, as they say, ‘the truth is in the pudding’. Finally it was said on other rugby websites and also mentioned in NZ.

But, am I the type of person to tell you “I told you so”? Smile

go and read for yourself:

http://www.rugby365.com/laws_referees/discuss/2638801.htm

The ongoing battle between rugby, union vs league and AFL, had something on a lighter note. Usain Bolt flew over to witness ‘the Battle for the Fastest Footy player':

Wallabies flyer Lachie Turner capped off an “incredible” couple of weeks by winning the Gatorade Bolt 100 metre sprint of the footy codes at Sydney Olympic Park on Wednesday evening.

Another 5 star performance!

Yours truely

Who is the fastest current SA rugby player over the 100 meters?

Rumour had it that James Small had a PB of 10.5 (hand time).

This is the end for the Bulls dynasty

September 14, 2010 in Uncategorized

This is the end, the end my friend, the end. Jim Morrison wrote that in the late 60’s. Fourty years later, it might be just as applicable they way the Blue Bulls are currently performing.

The Blue Bulls are under the pump and Saturday’s clash against their neighbour could be crucial. If they lose, it could be the end!

Admittedly, they will be a different herd when their Boks return. Will that be too late though? They still have to play WP at Loftus and Griquas.

Is this the beginning of the end for the Bulls dynasty?

(vote on poll on the right)

WP: It is ridiculous that Alister Coetzee doesn’t give Duane Vermeulen a rest this weekend. With Francois Louw, Pieter Louw and Nick Koster all doing well, it is the perfect time to rest Vermeulen.
