Stormers should not try so hard!

May 3, 2013 in Rugby, Super Rugby

It’s always seen as a bit of an injustice when a team loses a Rugby match despite having played the best Rugby all game long.  That was the case again this morning when the Stormers, despite winning every aspect of the game, lost to the Blues in North Harbour by an agonising 1 point.  What makes this loss even more agonising, is that the Stormers scored the only 2 tries of the match, while the Blues, traditionally known for their dangerous running rugby, didn’t score a single try.  A feather in the Stormers defensive cap as you may, but that’s where the party ends.  Scoring the most tries doesn’t win you matches.  Scoring the most points does.

It’s irritated me to some extent when, for the past two seasons, the Stormers suffered harsh critisism for not scoring enough tries. Yet, the ended first and second on the log, which is the important thing in this competition. I mean, you can be everybody’s favorite team, but if you don’t bring in the money, you soon find yourself on the street…like the Lions. Read the rest of this entry →

Sharks: Plumtree panicking?

April 24, 2013 in Rugby, Super Rugby

"Keegan, Marcell, Kanko, F*k off!"

“Keegan, Marcell, Kanko, F*k off!”

Yes, the Sharks are in a spot of bother.  They started off extremely well, winning several tough encounters, and when the flood gates opened on the Rebels, one would have not been blamed fo thinking they may have finally stepped up a gear.

Follow a rather dismal loss to the Stormers, and an uninspiring performance against the Cheetahs, not to even mention, but I will, the plethora of Injuries, and the Sharks are suddenly in a spot of bother to get their initial promising campaign back on track.

Then, Plum goes and as if saying the Cheetahs didn’t play Rugby, (yet still beat the Sharks), wasn’t bad enough, he now goes and throws all his toys out of the cot, and includes the gravity hungry Frans Steyn at Outside Centre with the injury to Jordaan, drops Keegan Daniel and Marcell Coetzee to the bench and includes Derick Minnie from the Lions instead, with Mtembu at number 8. Jean still not rested

November 14, 2012 in International, Rugby, Rugby Championship, Springboks

It seems as if Heyneke announced the squad with only two changes from the side that beat Ireland.

Battered, bruised, but still going on…

While I am happy that De Jongh comes into the outside centre role and that Gurthro Steenkamp comes on as loosehead, I am a little bit concerned for Jean who seems to have been struggling with injury and still not being rested. Read the rest of this entry →

SARU at centre of Bok inexperience

November 12, 2012 in International, Rugby, Rugby Championship, Springboks

The Springboks are still being haunted by SARU’s inability to create stability and consistency within the Springbok Management ranks.

This is what one can conclude when looking at the current lack of depth available in the Springbok squad as compared to arch rivals, New Zealand.

Lack of experience was the major excuse ringing in our ears like a broken record when Meyer’s troops failed to deliver during the Rugby Championship, and New Zealand who seemed to have lost lots of experience too in some key positions stormed to an undefeated victory of the Rugby Championship, winning all their matches. Boks loss not a “Bok” thing….

October 8, 2012 in Rugby, Rugby Championship, Springboks

Oregan HoskinsI had the wool pulled over my eyes last weekend! The defeat of the Aussies in clinical fashion lead me to believe we have a good chance to beat the All Blacks this weekend.  Say what you want about how bad this Aussie side is, but they still pipped us on the Rugby Championship log by beating Argentina twice, and also are ranked second again on the IRB Rankings. So yes, even this poor Aussie side is better than us despite us demolishing them last week.

Jean was right – SuperSport – Rugby

October 3, 2012 in Rugby, Rugby Championship, Springboks

I’m glad to see I’m not the only one thinking this…even though I often disagree with Brenden…

via Jean was right – SuperSport – Rugby.

Jean de Villiers may have stunned the whole country with what he said on Saturday night – that the Springboks had not changed their game-plan, but he was right.

Boks don’t have character?

September 12, 2012 in Rugby, Rugby Championship, Springboks

Why am I so unsympathetic towards Meyer? I found myself asking that question this morning, when someone said: “It’s only Meyer’s 6th game in charge, give him chance”. Am I being unfair by demanding better performances from the Springboks and not excusing poor performances?  Is it because, with the whole Peter de VIlliers saga, with him being appointed in 2008 rather than sticking to White or picking the obvious best candidate, Meyer, I simply expected far more from him?

Heyneke Meyer sticks to the usual…

August 15, 2012 in International, Rugby, Rugby Championship, Springboks

South Africa: 15. Zane Kirchner, 14. Bryan Habana, 13. Jean de Villiers (captain), 12. Frans Steyn, 11. Lwazi Mvovo, 10. Morné Steyn, 9. Francois Hougaard, 8. Keegan Daniel, 7. Willem Alberts, 6. Marcell Coetzee, 5. Andries Bekker, 4. Eben Etzebeth, 3. Jannie du Plessis, 2. Bismarck du Plessis, 1. Tendai Mtawarira Substitutes: 16. Adriaan Strauss, 17. Pat Cilliers, 18. Flip van der Merwe, 19. Jacques Potgieter, 20. Ruan Pienaar, 21. Pat Lambie, 22. JJ Engelbrecht

Given the spate of injuries, one would perhaps come up with only 2 or 3 changes to the side that Meyer decided to stick with. I say “stick with” because it’s still the core of the side that represented South Africa against England in the June tests…and still raises questions about Blue tinted eyerwear… Read the rest of this entry →

Letter from Jean De Villiers « 39th Avenue

August 2, 2012 in Rugby, Super Rugby

If you are a Stormers fan, you should probably be in the recovery phase of another Newlands funeral. I found this in my mailbox and thought I would share it with those still in denial, whose tears just cannot dry up. I hope you find some comfort. I did not. Read the rest of this entry →

Are the Bulls ready for the Championship?

July 23, 2012 in International, Rugby, Springboks, Super Rugby

The Super Rugby 2012 competition is all but done and dusted, and thanks to a stunning performance by the Sharks on the weekend, South Africa is certain to have a team in the final for the third time in four years!

The Bulls were incredibly disappointing but did not fail to meet my expectation of the loss margin. How bad they would play though, I don’t think anyone expected. Read the rest of this entry →
