Allez les Green?

January 15, 2013 in Rugby, Springboks

It is a real blessing that the IRB have established the regulations which makes it impossible for a Springbok, or other national rugby player, to play for another National team.  If not, we may as well have had to face some serious contenders when we play France next.

With their cheque books wide open, they already signed Juandre Kruger and Bryan Habana this season, and if reports are to be believed, Morne Steyn, John Smit and Danie Rossouw are also on their way to France.

Sticking with Pink, Morne Steyn might be off to Stade France who are well know for their bright pink jerseys

This made me wonder just how strong a Springbok squad can we make up just from our players in France, if above rumours are said to be true.

1. Gurthro Steenkamp

2. Gary Botha/John Smit

3. Wicus Blaauw/ Eugene van Staden

4. Bakkies Botha/ Gerhard Mostert

5. Juandre Kruger/Ross Skeate

6. Jaque Cronje

7. Danie Rossouw/Pedrie Wannenburg

8. Joe van Niekerk/Shaun Sowerby

9. Rory Kockett

10. Morne Steyn/Conrad Barnard

11. Bryan Habana

12. Paul Bosch

13. Gavin Hume

14. Sam Gerber

15. Greg Goosen

That’s a pretty decent side, especially if you look at that massive pack of forwards.  Fortunately the French are not too keen on our backs, and their rumoured procurement of Morne Steyn makes one wonder what they see in him except for his boot.  Although, I think that it would do Morne a great deal of good to get out of the kicking rut Heyneke Meyer has forced him into.

Some unfamiliar names are also listed in the backs, and I just wonder given the age of some of them, what could have been had the been able to progress further in their careers in South Africa.

  1. Lets face it, we cannot compete with the Euro. What we can do though is get our players their contracts and endorsements. We should be on the lookout for these French clubs to snatch up our youngsters. Jantjies, Taute, Rhule, Lambie, Etsebeth etc, are our future and the Springboks need them, so we need to create a culture where we can offer them competitive salaries.

  2. Money money money……

  3. Conrad Barnard?!?!?!

Give me J-L Potgieter any day before you pick him.

What is interesting about that team is you dont have a player that would make any South African team as an opensider. Pedrie Wannenburg will probably go in there. Gerrie Britz is also a contender on the blind (if he hasn’t retired)

  4. Well for me the trend of current Boks leaving for France is a worrying sight.
Kruger, Habana, Steyn and rumors around Bekker are still hanging.

What if Etzebeth, Goosen and/or Lambie decide to go??

All of Kruger, Habana and Steyn said they talked to Heyneke and he assured them (as far as possible) that they will remain in contest for bok spots.

    Bad signs for SA rugby.

    • Echo that!

    • Not difficult to see the reasons for the exodus of players… Not only money as some would suggest. SANZAR and their member unions are pushing players to the breaking point. The prestige of the national jersey these guys bleed for every weekend is becoming diluted and the lure of the jersey like in NZ will one day not be enough to keep them interested.
