The Virtue of Controversy
March 30, 2010 in Uncategorized
This post is not about mr. Controversy. Yes, I know that comes as a surprise as just about every post seems to be about him.
This is about differences of opinion and how dull things could be…
Imagine this post:

Morning chaps,
The Springboks are the best rugby team in the world.

Several posts today underlined the value of opinion as the basis to spark lively and interesting debate. Met Uysh introduced a religious angle to his Michael Jones post. And religion leads to debate, widely different interpretations…and wars, but at least that was avoided. Nevertheless, a difference of opinion is always better that mere acquiescence.
Snakedoc and Jedi posted about Superbru “luck”. Speed, Oom Paul and Better Man as always could not agree. Would there even have been a post if all just said:” Yes, it’s just luck”?
This brings me to what hopefully will resemble sporting content: Are there absolutes in sport? Apart from the fact that I absolutely know that I will play many rounds of k@k golf, I think the following people would absolutely be considered the best there ever was/is:
Daly Thomson Decathlon
Donald Bradman Cricket
Michael Schumacher F1
Lance Armstrong Cycling
Mohammed Ali Boxing
Michael Phelps Swimming
Nadia Commaneci Gymnastics
Haile Gabreselassi 10000m
Jack Nicklaus Golf
Martina Navratilova Women’s tennis
Pele Soccer
Sergei bubka Pole vault
Rudolph nureyev Ballet (yes, it is a sport)
Usain Bolt 100/200m
Xavier Sottomayor High Jump
Earl Rose Rugby
I am confident that opinions, for once, will not differ.
