Stormers team to face Bulls

February 18, 2013 in Uncategorized

15. Jaco Taute, 14. Gio Aplon, 13. Jean de Villiers (captain), 12. Damian de Allende, 11. Bryan Habana, 10. Elton Jantjies, 9. Nic Groom, 8. Duane Vermeulen, 7. Rynhardt Elstadt, 6. Siya Kolisi, 5. Andries Bekker, 4. De Kock Steenkamp, 3. Pat Cilliers, 2. Deon Fourie, 1. Steven Kitshoff

Substitutes: 16. Martin Bezuidenhout, 17. Frans Malherbe, 18. Don Armand, 19. Nizaam Carr, 20. Dewaldt Duvenage, 21. Gerhard van den Heever, 22. Joe Pietersen

So Schalk Burger failed to recover well enough from a calf strain to make the Bulls game. He did take contact end of last week but it looks like AC has decided not to gamble on Burger. It is probably a wise decision as this is a long long season. It is a pity though as Burgers physicality will be missed especially since Eben is also injured. At least Kolisi is still there to bring the grunt on defence.

The rest of the team holds no surprises as Juan was always a very doubtful starter.

In a bit of a pleasant surprise AC decided to go with Groom at 9. I think it is the smart move especially with Jantjies at 10 who needs a fast scrummie to let him unleash his full attacking skills.

All in all not a bad team a good blend of youth and experience. The only downfall to this team is that the first time they will play together will be against the Bulls at Loftus not an ideal scenario. Esp with a lot of new players in the squad.

  1. Huge gamble on Elton with no real flyhalf cover on the bench but the laaitie will come good. Glad to see Nic Groom starting

    • Jip, Coleman was OK against Cheetahs but struggled against Boland.
Thought it might have been smart to select Schreuder as back 10 as he was impressive the few times he has run out at 10.
Interesting Peter Grant is in Cape Town for birth of his child but will only be available to Stormers from the 25 of Feb.

      • On Elton I hope the boy can find form from the get go.
Stormers need that. Will be interesting to see how he goes with new team.
Also glad Groom got selected his weak point is his kicking from the base but with the new law of 5 sec behind ruck kicks from the base will become less and less.
Also be interesting to see how Hougie goes he had a terrible 2012 season

  2. I think NZL teams will win again, also AUS is on the rise.. their teams look better on paper then last year… now thats baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad.

    • Well percentage wise you are maybe correct.
I do not think to much of the Ausie sides as they have no depth and these seasons are to long for them.
I believe the Sharks has best chance of winning. And hopping the Stormers will finally also have a shot.

  3. Bulls will be without Akona Ndungane, Jacques Potgieter, Wilhelm Steenkamp, Dean Greyling and Marcel van der Merwe

  4. Bulls:

15 Zane Kirchner, 14 Lionel Mapoe, 13 JJ Engelbrecht, 12 Wynand Olivier, 11 Bjorn Basson, 10 Mornè Steyn, 9 Francois Hougaard, 8 Pierre Spies (c), 7 Dewald Potgieter, 6 Deon Stegmann, 5 Juandrè Kruger, 4 Flip van der Merwe, 3 Werner Kruger, 2 Chiliboy Ralepelle, 1 Mornè Mellett

Replacements: 16 Willie Wepener, 17 Frik Kirsten, 18 Grant Hattingh, 19 Arno Botha, 20 Jano Vermaak, 21 Louis Fouchè, Francois Venter

  5. I just hope, no matter the result, that its a great game like last 2 times round. Hard as nails and closer than it should be. Thats all a man can ask
