Schalla stil not ready!

February 5, 2013 in Uncategorized

The long awaited return of Stormers captain Schalk Burger is further delayed. (source News24)

He has a calf strain that turned out to be a more serious than previously thought and will be out for at least another 14 days. This will see him fit for the Bulls clash but if AC policies are to be believed only players that featured in the warm ups will be selected for the Bulls clash. With the exception of Elton Jantjies and Peter Grant(if back).

This would mean that Schalla is set to miss the opener with Jean de Villiers taking over¬†captaincy duties. This is probably a wise move from AC as Schalla has not had a competitive game since the first game of SR’12.

If I were AC I would be tempted to start Schalla from the bench against the Bulls thus giving him some time to get use to playing again. But Schalla has never been a good impact player so AC might opt to start him the next week. Kolisi will be wearing the no.6 jersey like last season with Elstedt or Armand taking the 7.

In other news Juan de Jong has been ruled out for at least 14 days, maybe more with a hamstring strain and new recruit Micheal Rhodes is also injured and out for probably 14 – 21 days.

Ps: It now seems AC has back tracked on his previous  statement and that all players injury free will be considered for the Bulls game. He has also hinted that the Stormers might play the WP Vodacom Cup team Wednesday the 13 of Feb to give some of the players missing the warm ups a chance to take contact.

  1. I’m guessing that if Schalk isn’t 100% he wont play at all. There is no need to risk him. Jean can also be reasted as long as de Jongh is fit.

The reason why Schalk can be rested is simple. Loose trio in his absence:

Kolisi, Elstadt and Vermeulen with Carr on the bench and Armandt not even making the squad.

Regarding players carrying niggle playing from the bench, I’m on Snorre’s side with that one. If we know a player can only play 40 min, rather start him and let him play 40 min than have a injury inside the first minute and you have no choice but to play him the entire game.

  2. How awesome will it be if all of the following loosies come back from injury this year: Spies, Brussow, J. Smith, Skalla. Throw them in the mix with Alberts, konkowski, Coetzee, Vermeulen, Kolisi, whatshisname playing overseas who made such an impact last year?

What other country in the world has an abundance of world class loose forwards like SA?? I’m glad I’m not H. Meyer who has to choose between this lot!

    • Jip but normally during such long season like we have now only about 4 or 5 are fit at a time. Thus having depth being so important even at international level.

  3. Well if AC was going to make an exception of Grant and Jantjies, no doubt he would make one for Burger as well.

    • Well Burger has not played a game in nearly a year now. While Grant has been playing the whole Des/Jan and even this weekend.
      Jantjies last played in EOYT.

      So you can’t really compare.
