Should Heyneke Meyer listen to the Fans?
June 5, 2012 in Uncategorized
A lot of people, me included, was dumd founded by some of HM squad selections.
The main reason being their is no real selection criteria visible for the fans to follow. Other than he went with plaeyrs he likes on a personal level.
I mean Kanko has hardly played rugby this year and has never really preformed in the Green and Gold.
Jano and JJ isn’t even regular starters for their franchise.
Willem, Zane and Elton has had very up and down seasons. Zane best matches was at altitude.
Potgieter was injured for 4 weeks.
Olivier has never preformed in the Green and Gold that said HM has never coach the Green and Gold.
So his criteria can’t be experience or Super Rugby form. One criteria that is apparant is that Size Does matter. The only exception being Kegan. Another criteria is that it looks like he will go with a kick and chase game plan. (hence Zana Bjorn ect.)
Well this is some of the reasons us fans our moaning a bit or are worried a bit.
BUT
Should HM listen to us?
The short answer is NO!! He has been given the task of coaching the boks and it is his beacon that is on the line if the Boks does not preform. He should be able to field the whole Bulls team if he feels like it. And as long as he can keep on winning we should not and will not complain.
We do have the right to question some of his less obvious decisions. And we can feel bad for players who deserve to be at the training camp in Durban but is sitting at home watching the Junior world cup.
I (and I suspect most bloggers) will judge HM on his results and results only.
I can’t wait for Saturday 5 pm!! Will be at a conference and will be watching it on a big screen with loads of beer.
(just hope I do not have to drink it to drown my sorrows. )
Cheers
Ps On a side note us Stormers fans should be happy their isn’t to many players in Bok squad. The S15 is still long and the players need the rest. I for one hope they use Etzebeth sparingly – only because he looks to be injured and playing with an injury. He is still young and playing with injuries now may hurt him in future.

Look what happened in the 3rd test against the B&I Lions when PdV when with largely “popular” choices – we lost and properly

As always, if the Boks perform no one will question the coach. The only problem is that if these Boks do not perform he really has dug himself an early grave

HE could have made a less controversial selection, I agree. If they lose he’ll have a hill to climb but I think the can win the series.

We SHOULD win the series. no disrepect to the English but seriously there is no real debate about which country has more skill/potential.
I’m just pointing out that if we lose HM is in a really bad situation

Exactly, Baylion. Then he brought on the one-dimensional, boring, uni-thinking robotic Morne Steyn from off the bench… who saved his life and took the series with a monster 53m pressure kick.

PdV did not went with popular choices didn’t Olivier and Zane play in that game?
Deff Zane remember he had a shocker.
PdV brought in M Steyn because of popular demand and he won the B&I L tour.

I truly believe that any coach like any good manager of a business will appoint staff that will get the job done and show profit/wins. No coach worth his salt will select someone who will not be able to cut the mustard. If he does, he should not be there and will not last in the harsh environment, that is SA rugby.

When morne Came on we were winning! we went behind once Pienaar went off!

The non-Bulls fans are secretly delighted that Morne is the Bok flyhalf.

I like what you said gen. coz i’ve had enough time now to get over some of the shocking selections that took place on saturday. at the end of the day i’m going to support the springboks regardless of who’s playing or not!!
my main concern is how/when/if mayer makes a mistake in game plan or player selection, what he does to rectify it.

meyer is obviously going the conservative route. i dont think goosen would’ve made the bench, not when a more test experienced lambie is also there..

The match 22 looks pretty good. Even thou I’m a Bulls supporter, I’m also questioning Wynand and Zane being there but so be it. I also don’t understand Jannie du Plessis as he is a soft tackler and gives away a lots of penalties..
The truth is also that most of the players that especially the WP’s are complaining about (Applon, jd Jongh, Elstadt )wouldn’t be in the match 22 anyways if most of the players would be available – so if HM needs to make compromise choices anyways, it is only understandable that he then picks players he knows. Who wouldn’t do the same?
Besides, we never know what is going on behind the scenes…
Good luck bokke, it will not be a walk in the park but I think they will scrape it.
