Lions: A lack of experienced depth

February 3, 2014 in Uncategorized

Looking at the potential Super Rugby squad it is not so much a case of not having talented players but the fact that the players in certain key positions are young and/or inexperienced at a higher level of rugby.

Potential squad:
(Players in brackets replacing currently injured players)

Hooker: Willie Wepener, Robbie Coetzee, (Malcolm Marx)
Prop: Bees Roux, Julian Redelinghuys, Schalk van der Merwe, Jacques van Rooyen
Lock: Franco van der Merwe, Martin Muller, Franco Mostert, Hugo Kloppers, Ruan Venter
Loose forward: Willie Britz, Jaco Kriel, Derick Minnie, Warwick Tecklenburg, Warren Whiteley, Lambert Groenewald
Scrumhalf: Michael Bondesio, Ross Cronje, Faf de Klerk
Flyhalf: Marnitz Boshoff, Willie du Plessis, (Guy Cronje)
Centre: Alwyn Hollenbach, Stefan Watermeyer, JW Jonker, Stokkies Hanekom
Wing: Deon van Rensburg, Lionel Mapoe, Deon Helberg, (Courtnal Skosan)
Fullback: Ruan Combrinck, Chrysander Botha, (Kobus de Kock)

Beseer: Francois du Toit, Ruan Dreyer, Chris van Zyl, Elton Jantjies, Dylan Des Fountain, Anthony Volmink, Andries Coetzee

There are a number of area of concern:

Props: Apart from Bees Roux the Lions props are either young and inexperienced or just plain inexperienced.
Locks: The Lions have experience in Franco van der Merwe and Martin Muller but their back-ups are inexperienced.
Scrumhalves: A serious lack of quality back-ups for Michael Bondesio, who has become more and more injury prone.
Centres: The first choice midfield of Hollenbach and Hanekom are injury prone and we will probably have to rely on Watermeyer and Jonker to see us through the season with the youngsters serving as further back-up.
Wings: While the Lions now have a number of real speedsters out wide their defence will be a worry.
Fullbacks: With Andries Coetzee out injured again only Ruan Combrinck really inspires any confidence at the back.

The only areas where the Lions seem to be well covered are in the loose forwards and at flyhalf with the first choice lock pairing solid enough as well.

I am not saying that the inexperienced players won’t be able to make the grade but 2014 will be a year when they will have to step up and use the opportunities they get to become household names.

My first choice match 23 with currently available players:

15 Ruan Combrinck, 14 Deon van Rensburg, 13 Stokkies Hanekom, 12 Stefan Watermeyer, 11 Lionel Mapoe, 10 Marnitz Boshoff, 9 Michael Bondesio, 8 Warren Whiteley, 7 Willie Britz, 6, Derick Minnie, 5 Franco van der Merwe, 4 Martin Muller, 3 Julian Redelinghuys, 2 Willie Wepener, 1, Bees Roux

Replacements: 16 Robbie Coetzee, 17 Jacques van Rooyen, 18 Schalk van der Merwe, 19 Franco Mostert, 20 Warwick Tecklenburg, 21 Faf de Klerk, 22 Willie du Plessis, 23 Chrysander Botha

What will your’s look like?

Lions and Stormers fans get what they want

September 18, 2013 in Uncategorized

It’s not often that everyone get what they hope for but it does happen sometimes.

A number of the Lions senior players extended their contracts (so far only JC Janse van Rensburg and Hendrik Roodt signed elsewhere) and will be available for Super Rugby 2014.

Probably the most awaited signing, by both Lions and Stormers fans is that of Elton Jantjies and the young man realised that the Stormers game just doesn’t suit his style of play. According to Beeld Jantjies re-signed for two years with the Lions.

Other players who have extended their contracts are:

Marnitz Boshoff, Lionel Mapoe, Alwyn Hollenbach, Ruan Combrinck, Franco van der Merwe, Jaco Kriel, Warren Whiteley and Willie Wepener.

Anthony Volmink, Stokkies Hanekom, Andries Coetzee, Derick Minnie and Willie Britz are already under contract through 2014.

Contract negotiations are continuing with other senior players.

The Golden Lions also contracted nine players from EG Jansen High School, winners of the Beeld Trophy, as well as eight players from the Golden Lions Craven Week side. 29 of the 32 new juniors contracted are from Gauteng schools.

Lions in exile

April 25, 2013 in Uncategorized

A brief look at the Lions in exile

On loan:

Jaco Taute (Stormers): Had a shaky start in his first match against the Bulls, took a knock in the nuts that sidelined him for a number of games, returned for two bench appearances before a knee injury sidelines him for the rest of the year. Long term injury

Lionel Mapoe (Bulls): A regular starter for the Bulls at wing but an up and down season in terms of performance. Very active and gets involved but his defence remains a concern. Had a good game against the Kings.

Elton Jantjies (Stormers): Another one with a shaky start to his Stormers sabatical. Relieved of kicking duties after an Oh from Four display against the Bulls, he had two good games against the Chiefs and the Brumbies when entrusted with the responsibility to manage the game but otherwise seems uncertain as to his role in the team and the gameplan that changes every week. Injury has sidelined him for a few weeks.

Franco van der Merwe (Sharks): He’s a grafter rather than one who would put them on the front foot but a solid performer for the Sharks in the lineouts and mauls.

Callie Visagie (Bulls): Being the third choice hooker for the Bulls he has spent most of his time in the Vodacom Cup team with only a few bench appearances in Super Rugby but scored a try in his first match.

Martin Bezuidenhout (Stormers): Used as cover for the Stormers hookers he has mostly played off the bench and will probably see less game time now that Scarra Ntubeni is back.

Derick Minnie (Sharks): Called up to provide the Sharks with a specialist fetcher and is included in the starting XV for the match against the Chiefs. His penchant for gving away penalties won’t endear him to the suffering Sharks.

JC Janse van Rensburg (Sharks): Will join up with the Sharks downunder and will probably be in the match 22 from week 2 on tour.

Andries Coetzee (Sharks): Had an active but disastrous debut for the Sharks. Had a good game in general but a heavy fall going for a high ball left him with a dislocated shoulder and out of action for a few months. Long term injury

Transferred:

Pat Cilliers (Stormers): Hasn’t really made an impact at the Stormers and has mainly been played off the bench as a utility prop.

Michael Rhodes (Stormers): Was out with injury for the most of the season so far but made an impact since he started.

Ruan Botha (Stormers): Has been out with injury so far.

Paul Willemse (Bulls): Established himself on the bench for the Bulls until an injury put him out of action.

Etienne Oosthuizen (Brumbies): Not part of the regular Brumbies squad but played in a few games.

Grant Hattingh (Bulls): Established himself as a regular starter playing mainly at lock until injury sidelined him.

Rudy Paige (Bulls): Had a few games off the bench but playing mainly in the Vodacom Cup side.

Caylib Oosthuizen (Cheetahs): Had a few games off the bench but playing mainly in the Vodacom Cup side.

Bandise Maku (Kings): Swops the starting spot with another ex-Lion, Hannes Franklin.

Waylon Murray (Kings): Took over the starting #13 spot after returning from injury.

Michael Killian (Kings): Will be playing his first match against the Cheetahs after returning from injury.

Josh Strauss (Glasgow Warriors): Has established himself as a regular with the Warriors.

Jacobie Adriaanse (Scarlets): Has established himself as a regular with the Scarlets

Doppies la Grange (Treviso): Has established himself as a regular with Teviso

Lions Player Updates – Jantjies, Mapoe loans confirmed

October 29, 2012 in Uncategorized

Elton Jantjies finally signed on the dotted line and will be on loan to the Stormers for 2013 Super Rugby. With the Stormers struggling with a lack of flyhalves during 2012 they are also trying to convince Catrakilis to stay.

Lionel Mapoe’s loan deal for 2013 Super with the Bulls have also been confirmed. Lionel has been a revelation at #13 this year and this has earned him a spot in the Boks EOYT squad. It will will be interesting to see where he plays for the Bulls.

Butch James seems to have changed his mind about retiring and is negotiating with the Sharks to serve as Pat Lambie’s backup in 2013. According to Keo he says that the deal is about 90% done. He has had a good year with the Lions and there definitely is still some rugby in the old bones.

Lions Player Updates – JC Stays!

October 22, 2012 in Uncategorized

Latest: JC Janse van Rensburg, speaking after his team’s heartbreaking 16-21 loss to Western Province in the Currie Cup semifinal at the weekend, revealed that he will remain with the team during their exile from Super Rugby next year.

“The [Golden Lions Rugby] Union has, over the years, been great towards me, always willing to give me a contract, and I just feel I have to pay them back.

“It will only be six months not playing Super Rugby but in 2014 we will be back with a bang.”

http://www.rugby365.com/article/50249-jc-and-his-lions-are-not-yet-extinct

Furthermore, Rapport reported (?) that the Lions is trying to get Elton Jantjies to extend his contract to 2014, although he will be on loan to the Stormers in 2013.

As mentioned in my Friday Snippets, the Lions’ two Varsity Cup teams, UJ and Wits, have been hard at work and have signed a number of the Lions youngsters, including four of their u/20 Boks, keeping them in the union. They also managed to recruit some ex-Lions juniors as well as some new talent.

With the Currie Cup over for the Lions some of the rumours about player movement should now be laid to rest as players announce their plans for the future.

Potential Lions side for Vodacom Cup and other matches based on known contracted players and ignoring rumours:

Lions Player Updates – Taute, Jantjies decided (maybe)

October 11, 2012 in Uncategorized

Latest: Cyberspace is atwitter about Jaco Taute and Elton Jantjies having decided to go to the Stormers on loan agreements although these moves are still subject to the agreements to be finalised and signed and there has beeN no official word on either of these moves yet.

Callie Visagie, the Lions hooker, has extended his contract with the Lions but will be loaned to the Bulls for the 2013 Super Rugby season. I expected Callie to stay in Gauteng as he is busy with his accountancy articles at a Joburg firm.

In news of lesser impact, the Lions signed Griquas backup flyhalf, Marnitz Boshoff, in a move to counter the loss of Elton Jantjies and Butch James, who is said to retire from rugby after the Currie Cup season.

In other news, Bandise Maku’s future is still unclear and both the Kings and the Lions want to sign him up but he hasn’t made a decision as yet.

The Lions CEO, Ruben Moggee, also confirmed that the Kings eventually emailed them about making players available. The Kings’ email will be passed on to the players and discussions will be held with interested players. However there will not be a large scale lending of players.

Lions Players Update – New or extended contracts

October 3, 2012 in Uncategorized

The Golden Lions announced the players who extended their contracts or who signed new contracts with the union. These players are in addition to players already under contract.

I am particularly glad to see Malcolm Marx’s name on the list as I was worried that we’d lose him. At 1,88m and 108 kg the SA Schools hooker is a monster and I won’t be surprised seeing him play some senior rugby next year.

The players who are extending or are signing their first contracts are

2013 Under 19s:

Malcolm Marx (2012 SA Schools), hooker, 2013 – 2014
Jano Venter (2012 SA Schools), loose forward 2013 – 2014
Akhona Sihunu (2012 SA Schools) scrumhalf 2013 – 2014

Lions player updates – Another Bull to become a Lion

October 3, 2012 in Uncategorized

Latest: Lions CEO Ruben Moggee says flyhalf Elton Jantjies is likely to join the Sharks or Stormers on loan for the 2013 Super Rugby campaign. However, Moggee confirmed to this site that nothing has been finalised yet.

‘We realise that our best players need to play at the highest level. And that is Super Rugby,’ said Moggee. ‘We are still planning to play in an alternative tournament with European, American and South Sea clubs next season, so we’ll need to have a competitive squad.

‘But we can afford to loan out a few of our best players to other Super Rugby franchises, if they can get starting opportunities. We won’t loan them out to be benched.

http://keo.co.za/2012/10/03/sharks-stormers-in-line-for-jantjies/

Young Blue Bull lock, Franco Mostert (21), has signed with the Lions for 2013. This follows on the news that Blue Bulls loose forward Warwick Tecklenburg signed with the Lions. Both these players get limited game time at the Bulls waiting behind Juandre Kruger and Flip van der Merwe (Mostert) or Dewald Potgieter, Arno Botha, CJ Standers, etc. (Tevklenburg). An exchange deal in process between the Bulls and the Lions to use their “bubbling under” players?

Die Beeld reports that Butch James will be retiring after the Currie Cup.

Gains:

Warwick Tecklenburg
Franco Mostert
