Lions Player Updates – Jantjies, Mapoe loans confirmed

October 29, 2012 in Uncategorized

Elton Jantjies finally signed on the dotted line and will be on loan to the Stormers for 2013 Super Rugby. With the Stormers struggling with a lack of flyhalves during 2012 they are also trying to convince Catrakilis to stay.

Lionel Mapoe’s loan deal for 2013 Super with the Bulls have also been confirmed. Lionel has been a revelation at #13 this year and this has earned him a spot in the Boks EOYT squad. It will will be interesting to see where he plays for the Bulls.

Butch James seems to have changed his mind about retiring and is negotiating with the Sharks to serve as Pat Lambie’s backup in 2013. According to Keo he says that the deal is about 90% done. He has had a good year with the Lions and there definitely is still some rugby in the old bones.

Lions player updates – Mapoe joins the Bok squad

October 1, 2012 in Uncategorized

Latest: Young Blue Bul lock, Franco Mostert (21), has signed with the Lions for 2013. This follows on the news that Blue Bulls loose forward Warwick Tecklenburg signed with the Lions. An exchange programme between the Bulls and the Lions?

Die Beeld reports that Butch James will be retiring after the Currie Cup.

According to Lionsworld the Cape Times reported this morning that Elton Jantjies signed a loan deal with the Stormers for 2013. At the moment this is still unconfirmed but a loan deal would be “good” news. So far this has been denied by the Lions while WP also claim ignorance.

Transfer: Young Blue Bulls loosie, Warwick Tecklenburg, signed a two year contract with the Golden Lions. 25 year old Tecklenburg is the first confirmed signing by the Golden Lions since they were kicked out of Super Rugby.

In other news: Lionel Mapoe has been called up to the Bok squad for the last test in the Rugby Championship, against the All Blacks in Soweto. Mapoe, who has had a stellar season at #13 can also play on the wing and was called in as replacement for Frans Steyn, who is out for about 3 months with an ankle injury. Ironically, since being kicked out of Super Rugby the Lions have produced three new Boks with two more in the Bok squad.

2013: According to Die Beeld the Lions are arranging up to 17 matches for the first half of next year to replace Super Rugby. More details will be announced at an information breakfast on 22 October.
