Lions Player Updates – Jantjies, Mapoe loans confirmed

October 29, 2012 in Uncategorized

Elton Jantjies finally signed on the dotted line and will be on loan to the Stormers for 2013 Super Rugby. With the Stormers struggling with a lack of flyhalves during 2012 they are also trying to convince Catrakilis to stay.

Lionel Mapoe’s loan deal for 2013 Super with the Bulls have also been confirmed. Lionel has been a revelation at #13 this year and this has earned him a spot in the Boks EOYT squad. It will will be interesting to see where he plays for the Bulls.

Butch James seems to have changed his mind about retiring and is negotiating with the Sharks to serve as Pat Lambie’s backup in 2013. According to Keo he says that the deal is about 90% done. He has had a good year with the Lions and there definitely is still some rugby in the old bones.

Lions Player Updates – JC Stays!

October 22, 2012 in Uncategorized

Latest: JC Janse van Rensburg, speaking after his team’s heartbreaking 16-21 loss to Western Province in the Currie Cup semifinal at the weekend, revealed that he will remain with the team during their exile from Super Rugby next year.

“The [Golden Lions Rugby] Union has, over the years, been great towards me, always willing to give me a contract, and I just feel I have to pay them back.

“It will only be six months not playing Super Rugby but in 2014 we will be back with a bang.”

http://www.rugby365.com/article/50249-jc-and-his-lions-are-not-yet-extinct

Furthermore, Rapport reported (?) that the Lions is trying to get Elton Jantjies to extend his contract to 2014, although he will be on loan to the Stormers in 2013.

As mentioned in my Friday Snippets, the Lions’ two Varsity Cup teams, UJ and Wits, have been hard at work and have signed a number of the Lions youngsters, including four of their u/20 Boks, keeping them in the union. They also managed to recruit some ex-Lions juniors as well as some new talent.

With the Currie Cup over for the Lions some of the rumours about player movement should now be laid to rest as players announce their plans for the future.

Potential Lions side for Vodacom Cup and other matches based on known contracted players and ignoring rumours:

Lions Player Updates – Taute, Jantjies decided (maybe)

October 11, 2012 in Uncategorized

Latest: Cyberspace is atwitter about Jaco Taute and Elton Jantjies having decided to go to the Stormers on loan agreements although these moves are still subject to the agreements to be finalised and signed and there has beeN no official word on either of these moves yet.

Callie Visagie, the Lions hooker, has extended his contract with the Lions but will be loaned to the Bulls for the 2013 Super Rugby season. I expected Callie to stay in Gauteng as he is busy with his accountancy articles at a Joburg firm.

In news of lesser impact, the Lions signed Griquas backup flyhalf, Marnitz Boshoff, in a move to counter the loss of Elton Jantjies and Butch James, who is said to retire from rugby after the Currie Cup season.

In other news, Bandise Maku’s future is still unclear and both the Kings and the Lions want to sign him up but he hasn’t made a decision as yet.

The Lions CEO, Ruben Moggee, also confirmed that the Kings eventually emailed them about making players available. The Kings’ email will be passed on to the players and discussions will be held with interested players. However there will not be a large scale lending of players.

Gains:

Warwick Tecklenburg – flank (Bulls)
Marnitz Boshoff – flyhalf (Griquas)

Lions Players Update – New or extended contracts

October 3, 2012 in Uncategorized

The Golden Lions announced the players who extended their contracts or who signed new contracts with the union. These players are in addition to players already under contract.

I am particularly glad to see Malcolm Marx’s name on the list as I was worried that we’d lose him. At 1,88m and 108 kg the SA Schools hooker is a monster and I won’t be surprised seeing him play some senior rugby next year.

The players who are extending or are signing their first contracts are

2013 Under 19s:

Malcolm Marx (2012 SA Schools), hooker, 2013 – 2014
Jano Venter (2012 SA Schools), loose forward 2013 – 2014

Lions player updates – Another Bull to become a Lion

October 3, 2012 in Uncategorized

Latest: Lions CEO Ruben Moggee says flyhalf Elton Jantjies is likely to join the Sharks or Stormers on loan for the 2013 Super Rugby campaign. However, Moggee confirmed to this site that nothing has been finalised yet.

‘We realise that our best players need to play at the highest level. And that is Super Rugby,’ said Moggee. ‘We are still planning to play in an alternative tournament with European, American and South Sea clubs next season, so we’ll need to have a competitive squad.

‘But we can afford to loan out a few of our best players to other Super Rugby franchises, if they can get starting opportunities. We won’t loan them out to be benched.

http://keo.co.za/2012/10/03/sharks-stormers-in-line-for-jantjies/

Young Blue Bull lock, Franco Mostert (21), has signed with the Lions for 2013. This follows on the news that Blue Bulls loose forward Warwick Tecklenburg signed with the Lions. Both these players get limited game time at the Bulls waiting behind Juandre Kruger and Flip van der Merwe (Mostert) or Dewald Potgieter, Arno Botha, CJ Standers, etc. (Tevklenburg). An exchange deal in process between the Bulls and the Lions to use their “bubbling under” players?

Die Beeld reports that Butch James will be retiring after the Currie Cup.

Warwick Tecklenburg
Franco Mostert

Lions Player Contracts, Loans, Releases & Other Issues

September 11, 2012 in Uncategorized

It has already been made known that some players are leaving (Josh being the latest), that others have contracts until October 2013 and yet others have contracts that allow them to play for another team in Super Rugby so it all seems signed, settled and hunky dory in Lions country, at least as far as player issues go.

Many Lions supporters try to be optimistic about the future and seem to feel that even if we lose our top senior players “at least we still have the school boys and juniors coming through to rebuild”.

But all is not always as it seems, unfortunately, and many Lions supporters live in Cloud Cuckoo Land.

Legal Contracts:

The reality that faces the Lions is that most big unions and franchises will not want to sign a player for one Super Rugby season and then release him back to the Lions. If we learned anything from what happened at the SARU General Council vote most unions are not interested in the Lions future and they will do whatever they can to renege on any loan agreement. And if they really want the player they will, at best, offer to buy out his contract with the Lions and, at worst, just keep him and force the Lions into a legal battle they can ill afford.

And with the Lions unable to ensure competitive game time and exposure for their top players, and therefore unable to provide him with meaningful employment, they stand a good chance of losing in court irrespective of what the contracts say.

The country is fill of journeymen playing for the lesser unions, of which the GLRU is now one, but there is limited opportunity for top players to showcase their skills and the fact is that not a single player from the lesser unions make it into the Springbok side. It will, therefore, be very difficult for the GLRU to make a case for keeping a player who has a chance of making it at national level.

Moral Contracts:

Apart from the legal issue there is also the moral issue of a union being responsible for looking after a player’s career and advancement opportunities, something that will be virtually impossible to do when not competing at the top level.

What is Kevin de Klerk going to do is one of the players come to him with a two-year or three-year contract offer and asks: “Please release me and let me go”? Refuse him? (We just saw Josh released to sign a three year contract with Glasgow Warriors)

Junior Players:

So, the Lions will have to look at building and rebuilding from their junior ranks?

Once a again this is a bit of a pipe dream as the best juniors and schoolboys will look to further their careers and the Lions will have very little to offer these youngsters. Players like Paul Willemse, Ruan Botha, Caylib Oosthuizen, Rudy Paige and others will look to move to unions where the playing opportunities are better.

And it is not merely a case that they might have the opportunity to play Super Rugby one day. The fact is that during the Super Rugby competition opportunities to play senior rugby open up as the franchises use their top players for Super Rugby and draw on the junior players to play Vodacom Cup, something lesser unions are not able to do. In non-Super Rugby unions their top players play Vodacom Cup leaving little for the junior players except play club and varsity rugby.

Unfortunately we have yet to see the ripple effect of the decision to kick the Lions out of Super Rugby but I dread the day comes for us to play a knock out match to get back into Super Rugby, even against the Kings, with all our top players gone.

I would love it if Kevin de Klerk and the Lions management can counter the impact of the SARU decision will have on player migration but unfortunately I do not see how they are going to do it.

Lions Player Loss Updates

August 28, 2012 in Uncategorized

Latest: 19 Year Lions old utility forward Etienne Oosthuizen has signed a two year contract with the Brumbies, according to Die Beeld. Oosthuizen is one of the Lions top young locks and was named Lions u/19 Player of the Year and he played Super Rugby, Currie Cup and Vodacom Cup for the Lions. Although he was in the u/20 Boks practice squad this year he didn’t make the team for the JRWC and he can still qualify to play for Australia in three years. The move hasn’t been confirmed by the Lions yet.
http://www.beeld.com/Sport/Rugby/Jake-lok-jong-Leeus-slot-na-Brumbies-met-kontrak-20120913

The Lions player exodus has started and can be attributed, in part at least, to SARU’s decision to kick the Lions out of Super Rugby. How can it be good for SA rugby that one union gets irreparably damaged to artificially advance another?

“The Golden Lions Rugby Union this afternoon announced that a few of its junior and senior players have not renewed their contracts after 31 October 2012. These players have elected not to renew their contracts following the uncertainty leading up to the Vodacom Super Rugby 2013 decision. The players received great exposure at the Lions and we wish them well in their future endeavors. The players will remain part of the group until 31 October 2012. These players are: Jacobie Adriaanse, Caylib Oosthuizen, Paul Willemse and Ruan Botha.”

Where to go for the Lions players?

August 22, 2012 in Uncategorized

I see that Kevin de Klerk is a bit upset with Alistair Coetzee openly drooling for the Lions players who might be available to him when the Lions body isn’t even cold yet. While it’s OK for us plebs to speculate about possible player movements I suppose it is a bit insensitive for an opposing coach to openly lick his lips in anticipation.

I don’t want to p!ss off my president even further but let’s look at the players and who could benefit whom. I’m not considering the Kings as an option, and not for the obvious reason but mainly because any player with Bok aspirations shouldn’t go there and the same applies to the Cheetahs to an extent. In South Africa it is very difficult to crack the big time while playing for a losing side – Pat Cilliers is the first Lions player to be made Springbok while playing for the Lions since 2007.

Of course, Cheeky might always make a deal that a certain number of Kings players must be selected for the Boks “in the interest of transformation”.

Players whose contracts expire 2013:

1 JANSE V RENSBURG, JC
As a scrummager JC is on par with any looshead prop in the country but his play in the loose probably puts him behind the Beast (Sharks) and Coenie (Cheetahs) while WP has young Ginger, who’s doing well. So his best option would be the Bulls where he should be able to lift Dean Greyling.

2 VAN DER LINDE, CJ
His injuries make him a poor buy for any team and as his time as a Bok is over the Kings may be an option.

3 VISAGIE, CALLIE
While Callie’s general play has been good his lineout work needs to be improved. He should stay with the Lions for another year to sharpen up because at best he will be a bench option elsewhere.

4 CILLIERS, PAT
Getting his Bok cap has upped his marketability. Moving back to the Sharks will put him in the same position as he was in when he left, behind Jannie du Plessis. The Bulls and WP are his best options.

5 ROODT, HENDRIK
Roodt has finally started to play to his promise and is a good #4 option however with the Sharks (Bressler), WP (Etzebeth/Elstadt), Bulls (van der Merwe) catered for the Cheetahs remain the only real option, except if Jake White feels he could use him at the Brumbies

6 VAN DER MERWE, FRANCO
As the third best lineout jumper in Super Rugby and a good player in the loose he could benefit most teams but WP has Bekker and the Bulls has Kruger which leaves the Sharks and the Cheetahs. Otherwise he should look at an overseas payday – Japan or the Brumbies maybe.

7 MINNIE, DERICK
As one of the few fetchers in the country he should be the target of a number of teams but the Bulls is probably his best bet.

8 KRIEL, JACO
New to Super Rugby he hasn’t had time to build market value yet and should stay with the Lions for the moment.

9 RHODES, MICHAEL
The premier utility forward in the country before his injury Rhodes should have a pick of teams to choose from, locally and overseas. Locally WP or the Bulls could be his options.

10 GREEFF, STEPHAN
New to Super Rugby and with a number of injury layoffs he hasn’t had time to build market value yet and should stay with the Lions for the moment.

11 STRAUSS, JOSH
The problem for Josh is that SA is flooded with loosies playing a similar style of rugby and all the teams seem to have stocks so going overseas, as is rumoured, is probably his best option.

12 WHITELEY, WARREN
A classic number 8 is an age where most number 8s are retreaded 7s and sitting out most of Super Rugby has limited his exposure. He needs a team that plays an open game (Sharks, Cheetahs) but will struggle to get a starting berth.

13 BONDESIO, MICHAEL
The dearth of quality scrumhalves in South Africa should work in his favour but other than at WP and maybe the Sharks there isn’t a starting spot available to him.

14 CRONJE, ROSS
His poor Super Rugby campaign limited his marketability. Stay with the Lions.

15 MOOLMAN, WHESTLEY
Injuries limited his game time and with no Super Rugby experience he should stay with the Lions.

16 JANTJIES, ELTON
He needs a team where he won’t be forced into a conservative gameplan. With the Cheetahs, Sharks and Bulls catered for WP seems to be the only option but their gameplan might stifle him. However, at WP he could probably get the best out of the quality backline they have and help them score more tries. Otherwise he should go to overseas, maybe New Zealand.

17 CRONJE, GUY
With no Super Rugby experience he should stay with the Lions.

18 TAUTE, JACO
Very good at fullback and started making his mark at centre before he was injured. Should be able to walk into any SA team but WP or the Bulls is probably his best bet.

19 HOLLENBACH, ALWYN
As a journeyman centre the other teams have players on par or better. Stay with the Lions.

20 MAPOE, LIONEL
As a winger Mapoe has been coming on nicely at #13 too but he’s up against stiff competition and I don’t think he’ll be welcome at the Sharks or the Cheetahs. Could be a good option for either the Bulls or WP.

21 DES FOUNTAIN, DYLAN
Another journeyman centre like Hollenbach and the other teams have players on par or better. Should stay with the Lions.

22 MOOLMAN, BRADLEY
With no Super Rugby experience he should stay with the Lions.

23 VAN RENSBURG, DEON
Too slow on wing and with the Lions youngsters coming through one of the few players where the Kings might be an option.

24 HELBERG, DEON
New to the Lions and with no Super Rugby experience he should stay.

25 COETZEE, ANDRIES
Exciting young talent who can play anywhere in the backline. I would hate to see him being second or third choice in another team. With the Sharks well stocked at the back he should thrive at the Cheetahs, WP or Bulls.

26 KAMANA, JAMES
Hasn’t really shown anything and have been injured a lot so I don’t think he’ll get many offers. Stay with the Lions.

Lions players under contract for 2013

August 18, 2012 in Uncategorized

My sabbatical was short lived but it gave me a bit of time to think and to start from scratch I’m still figuring out how I will be focusing my new blog, Lions Pride. As I am normally a fairly positive person I am still working at overcoming my bitterness about the SARU decision and the duplicity of some of the unions.

From the Golden Lions FB page

As stated before, the decision taken at the SARU General Council meeting yesterday to eliminate the Lions from SupeRugby in 2013 is very disappointing. Media speculation of an immediate exodus of players have created further uncertainty amongst supporters and stakeholders and Lions management therefore deem it prudent to confirm that the larger group of senior players are contracted at least until 31 October 2013. This list of senior players so contracted include, amongst others:

1 JANSE V RENSBURG, JC
2 VAN DER LINDE, CJ
3 VISAGIE, CALLIE
4 CILLIERS, PAT
5 ROODT, HENDRIK
6 VAN DER MERWE, FRANCO
7 MINNIE, DERICK
8 KRIEL, JACO
9 RHODES, MICHAEL
10 GREEFF, STEPHAN
11 STRAUSS, JOSH
12 WHITELEY, WARREN
13 BONDESIO, MICHAEL
14 CRONJE, ROSS
15 MOOLMAN, WHESTLEY
16 JANTJIES ELTON (during SupeRugby 2013, the player may elect to play at a different franchise if the Lions are not participating in SupeRugby).
17 CRONJE, GUY
18 TAUTE, JACO
19 HOLLENBACH, ALWYN
20 MAPOE, LIONEL
21 DES FOUNTAIN, DYLAN
22 MOOLMAN, BRADLEY
23 VAN RENSBURG, DEON
24 HELBERG, DEON
25 COETZEE, ANDRIES
26 KAMANA, JAMES

Management and players will meet next week to strategise and plan, but for now everyone is focused on the match against the Sharks.
We want to thank the Lions fans for all their support!

Senior players not on that list as their contracts probably expire Oct 2012:

Jacobie Adriaanse
Cobus Grobbelaar
Butch James
Bandise Maku
Waylon Murray
Wikus van Heerden

With these players on Super Rugby salaries (minimum R31500 p.m.) the Lions will have to look at farming some of them out.
