JC leaving is going to hurt the Lions
Baylion said on February 22, 2013
True but we haven’t had confirmation yet. As I wrote previously, we have a number of players whose contracts expire this year and I am worried we’re going to lose a number of them after the CC:
2013 Under-21s:
Mark Pretorius, hooker, 2013
Gideon Muller, prop, 2013
Fabian Booysen, loose forward, 2013
Jacques Kotze, prop – 2013
2013 Seniors:
Robert du Bruyn Centre 2013
JR Esterhuizen, wing, 2013
Deon Helberg, wing, 2013
Ruan Combrinck, Wing/fulback – 2013
JC Janse van Rensburg, prop – 2013
CJ van der Linde, prop – 2013
Hendrik Roodt, lock – 2013
Jaco Kriel, flank – 2013
Stephan Greeff, lock – 2013
Warren Whiteley, eighthman – 2013
Michael Bondesio, scrumhalf – 2013
Ross Cronje, scrumhalf – 2013
Whestley Moolman, scrumhalf – 2013
Guy Cronje, flyhalf – 2013
Alwyn Hollenbach, centre – 2013
Dylan Des Fountain, centre – 2013
Bradley Moolman, centre – 2013

I think that depends a lot on the Kings, and the financial picture at the Lions. Personally i wished Free State had begged Toyota for a few more Rand so they could loan him from the Lions.
He’s been one of the form looseheads in SA the last year, and its always bad losing someone like that.

The Lions finances are apparently not too bad. Not rosy, but we’ll survive.
Most of the sponsors stayed and the Ellis Park suite holders too (only two canceled but more signed up)
The Lions Challenge costs are carried by the Lions but there are sponsors too and the USA trip is largely covered by sponsors in the US.
The problem is that even if we win the knockouts we’ve lost so many players that we will struggle to be even remotely competitive in Super Rugby in 2014

If most of the sponsors stayed they must have been in serious trouble financially.
If i just do a quick estimate of CTC for a few of them:
Jantjies – 1.3-1.8 He’s played for the Boks and considered marquee
Taute – 1.2-1.8 Same as Jantjies. Off Junior Contract and on higher Senior Contract
Mapoe – 1.3 is the number i think i heard way back when
Rhodes – Probably 600-800k
Cilliers – Same boat as Rhodes
Franco – probably 800-1.3
Maku – Same as Franco
Baywatch – same as Franco
With some rounding that gives you 6-7 mil. Josh was probably cheap since they signed him from VC.
Hoe gald arent they now WP took Jacque Fourie’s 3.6 off the books.
