Lions Challenge – The Russians Are Coming!

January 4, 2013 in Uncategorized

Match 1:
19 Jan @ 19h00: vs Russia – LIVE on SS1 & SHD

The official launch of the Lions Challenge is set for Thursday 10 January when the details of the confirmed fixtures will be announced for the Lions Super Rugby replacement schedule for 2013.

In the meantime the Rugby Federation Russia web site has confirmed the Russian team’s trip to the City of Gold (http://translate.google.com/translate?sl=ru&tl=en&js=n&prev=_t&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&eotf=1&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.rugby.ru%2F%3Fp%3D4603) with the team scheduled to arrive in South Africa on 7 January to play UJ on 14 January and the Lions on 19 January.

Although the Lions squad has been depleted with many key players either moving on or being on loan to other franchises (Lions Player Losses & Gains) the Lions have arranged a full schedule of matches (Lions fixtures 2013) for the 2013 season. These matches, apart from the matches against the other SA franchises, sees the Lions taking on progressively stronger sides in preparation for their knock out matches at the end of the Super Rugby season against the SA Conference wooden spooners.

The Lions have clearly decided to focus on the preparation for their re-entry into Super Rugby leaving their Vodacom Cup campaign in the hands of their next level youngsters.

It will be interesting to see whether the Lions have been able to tie down match sponsors and TV time for their replacement schedule.
