I watched an old favourite last night, Catch 22 based on the book by Joseph Heller which coined the phrase catch 22. For those of you unfamiliar with the phrase, Catch 22 refers to a buggered if you do, buggered if you don’t situation.
Joseph Heller’s original title for his book was Catch 18 but changed it to Catch 22 after Leon Uris’s Mila 18 was published shortly before his book was due to be publish. We’ll never know if the phrase “Catch 18″ would have gained the same popularity as “Catch 22″ but, in hindsight, it just doesn’t role off the tongue.
Now, what does all this have to do with rugby, or sport? Nothing really, but we supporters often find ourselves in a Catch 22 situation, especially when it comes to players selected for the Boks.
If you like a player but he isn’t selected you might want the player selected in his place to play poorly but if he does the Boks might lose and you really want the Boks to win, but if he plays well and the Boks win your player might not be selected the next time.
So who will be your Catch 22 selections for the EOYT?
