Springbok squad for the EOYT

October 28, 2012 in Uncategorized

Heyneke Meyer announced his EOYT squad with the only real surprise maybe being that he isn’t giving any of the overplayed and out of form Boks a break.

He largely stuck to his old squad and I suppose that was expected as the end of December is D-Day for the team rankings will determine the draw for the 2015 Rugby World Cup and Meyer couldn’t be too experimental with his squad.

However, some of the Boks really looked tired in recent weeks. Beast, Doc Jannie, Alberts, Hougaard, JdV and Mornetjie can all do with a good rest before Super Rugby starts in earnest and we have more than capable replacements available, except maybe for Jean at number 12.

It is also a pity that he didn’t see his way open to select the form loosehead, JC Janse van Rensburg, and rather went with Guthro Steenkamp.

It will be interesting to see whether he plays Jaco Taute at fullback after the youngster publicly stated that that is his preferred position and whether he now sees Lambie as a flyhalf or still as fullback.

Raymond Rhule has forced his way into the squad with great performances this year and hopefully this youngster will make the step up to Bok rugby but there must be a number of players who would feel that they have done enough but were left out – Deon Fourie, Tim Whitehead and Robert Ebersohn to name a few.

Zane Kirchner, Jaco Taute

JP Pietersen, Lwazi Mvovo, Raymond Rhule

Jean de Villiers (captain), Juan de Jongh, Lionel Mapoe

Morné Steyn, Elton Jantjies, Pat Lambie,

Ruan Pienaar, Francois Hougaard, Jano Vermaak

Duane Vermeulen

Willem Alberts, Marcell Coetzee, Francois Louw, Arno Botha

Eben Etzebeth, Juandré Kruger, Flip van der Merwe, Franco van der Merwe

Jannie du Plessis, Tendai Mtawarira, Pat Cilliers, Gurthrö Steenkamp, CJ van der Linde

Adriaan Strauss, Chiliboy Ralepelle, Schalk Brits

  1. Hey Baylion – great article!
Disagree totally regarding Daniels going awol in “big” games and he won’t really make an impact with the Bokke until they approach their games with a little less of a ‘stamp en moer’ gameplan.
I am sure that if he was a new zealander or aussie he’d be in their side for sure – and that’s saying something.

    • I said he goes missing in “tight” games. I agree that in more open games he will be great, the game against the Wallabies at Loftus was tailor made for him :), but unfortunately that’s not normal test rugby, not Bok rugby anyway. BTW, the same applies to Spies, for all his gym-enhanced bulk he isn’t good at bash up rugby.

  2. … wow so much hate on the bulls… i actually wish the bulls would drop out of the currie cup and super rugby for a year or 2 or 3… go play in england or in the french divisions… then atleast there will be less warra warra on how kak the bulls are and actually deal with the real reason were loosing games… Strategy and conviction, the problem is not the players but the game plan… we also need to look at our basics again, too many handling errors, too many missed tackles, too much kicking. When we drive we must drive not stop and try again. We need to run with the ball, when players like pietersen run, tehy are amazing, but when they try there silly steps or hesitate, they get beaten like amateurs…

  3. There are a lot of people pushing for Taute at 15. I personally would prefer to see Ludik there. I like Taute, but needs to up his defensive game. I think that Ludik has been faultless on defense, and devastating on attack. Kitshoff is a player for the future. He is not a strong enough scrummager yet. Those that know say that a prop only starts maturing in his early thirties, so he has time and talent aplenty, but not for the Boks yet.

    • Ludik has been underperforming for so many years that it is going to take more than a good Currie Cup season to make him a real Bok contender. He has often not even been the Sharks’ first choice fullback during Super Rugby this year and only got starting positions on wing because of injuries to other players.

  4. If Daniels goes missing, i dont want to know what Spies did against England and Super 15.. J Potgieter is anothe example of someone who actually did play worse for Boks than Bulls – pity as i like him and he is a fellow EC boy. It is good for a coach to have convictions but this is pure blind arrogance and insulting the SA public. Fourie and Daniel were standouts in Super 15 and CC – shame on HM for not taking one!

  5. I agree with you!!! Notice the NZ side? THE BEST PLAYER GETS PICKED FOR THE POSITION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NOT HERE! BIAS STUPIDITY! Man get that right and we will beat anyone…

  6. Backline is going to be taught a lesson in Rugby…starting 9,10,12,13 and 15 so wrong, we know who its going to be. Added, If he chooses not to start with Mvovo (almost a given) on wing…er nog a story too!!!!!!!!!!!!! HM will however not be swayed…its called bash with no brains and get a hiding…Ireland will be the start of many schmacks, sorry to say.

  7. I disagree about Keegan, Baylion. I have never seen him “go missing”, and my biggest gripe is that he was not given a real chance. HM has given other players chance after failing chance, and players like Mvovo and Daniel he didn’t. King of double standards.

  8. i really think people need to let go of this provincial bias line. HM is a coach who wants to win and he will use any information he has to do that.

  9. Im still worried about Jannie, the guy has played to much rugby and travelled in 1 season more than most people do in 10 years. His body and mind must be close to giving up. Mujati would have been a great replacement to help spread the load for Jannie, a shame about the Citizenship stuff.

  10. Thanks for the news, didn’t know also for Mujati. What a pity.

  11. Flo injured his neck over the weekend and will be examined today to determine how serious it is.

Adriaan Strauss is also an uncertainty due to a knee injury while JdV may also be unavailable for the first test against Ireland.

  12. In my opinion, the best team for the November test was :

    1. JC Janse Van Rensburg
    2. Adriaan Strauss
    3. Brian Mujati or Pat Cilliers or Jacobie Adriaanse or Frans Malherbe
    4. Eben Etzebeth
    5. Juandré Kruger
    6. Deon Fourie or Marnus Schoeman
    7. Marcell Coetzee or Willem Alberts or Jaco Kriel
    8. Duane Vermeulen
    9. Jano Vermaak or Cobus Reinach or Nick Groom
    10. Pat Lambie
    11. François Hougaard or Raymond Rhule or Willie Le Roux
    12. Tim Whitehead or Juan de Jongh
    13. Juan de Jongh or Paul Jordaan or Robert Ebersohn
    14. JP Pietersen
    15. Jaco Taute or Willie Le Roux or Andries Coetzee or Louis Ludik

    • A very experimental team.

BTW, Mujati don’t qualify for SA as he’s not a SA citizen (remember the Beast saga?), in fact he’s not even an SA resident anymore.

    • The team looking into the future should be the following:

      15. Jaco Taute

      11. Raymond Rhule
      12. Juan de Jongh
      13. Lionel Mapoe
      14. Willie Le Roux

      10. Pat Lambie
      9. Cobus Reinach

      8. Duane Vermeulen
      6. Marcel Coetzee
      7. Keegan Daniels
      4. Eben Etzebeth
      5. Jaco van der Merwe
      3. JC van Rensberg
      2. Deon Fourie
      1. Connie Oosthuizen

Reserves: Adriaan Strauss, Juandre Kruger, Willem Alberts, Kitchoff, Jantjies, Paul Jordan. Jano Vermaak, Andries Bekker.

Heynecke’s blind loyalty to the Blue Bulls and provincialism syndrome is going to cost the country too much. I don’t think he realises the damage he is causing to the young players he continually put on the team just to warm the bench and carry bags. He is killing them emotionally. Sies !!!

  13. He was no worse than vermeulen on Saturday and the conditions should have suited the tighter Vermeulen. Certainly no need for another crash and bash loosie in the squad and thats why a Daniel or Fourie would have beena better choice a bit of skill on the bench than the average Arno Botha.

Just raising the point about English players so guys can watch out for it- The truth is there are not many good English speaking players around so it is hard to gauge but an Ex- Bull told me straight that HM doesnt even want English Speakers at the Bulls at any level .

On a side note it was also odd how hard he tried to get big Vic back when we were well covered at lock but didnt try get JS back as cover for Strauss when Bismark was injured.

His arrogance astounds me considering his woeful record so far- Loose 2 games on this tour and we will be talking about him as the blue bafoon

  14. It is vital that we do well on the tour. The draw for the 2015 RWC is on 3 December and will be based on rankings after the matches on 1 December.

At the moment the points spread between #2 (Australia) and #6 (Wales) is only about 4 points so we really cannot afford any losses given the other teams have some “easy” games.

    Current Rankings:

    1 NEW ZEALAND 92.91
    2 AUSTRALIA 86.37
    3 SOUTH AFRICA 84.69
    4 ENGLAND 83.09
    5 FRANCE 83.03
    6 WALES 82.26
    7 IRELAND 79.85
    8 ARGENTINA 78.63
    9 SCOTLAND 77.97

    November tests:

England > Fiji, Wallabies, Springboks, All Blacks
Wales > Argentina, Samoa, All Blacks, Wallabies
Scotland > All Blacks, Springboks, Tonga
    Ireland > Springboks, Argentina,
    France > Wallabies, Argentina, Samoa
    Argentina > Wales, France, Ireland
Wallabies > France, England, Italy, Wales
All Blacks > Scotland, Italy, Wales, England
    Springboks > Ireland, Scotland, England

  15. Why not Kitschoff he is really growing as a player maybe only to be in the setup but must agree these players are being over played. I have not stopped watching rugby since February no cricket season for me. lol

    • I feel Kitshoff is still too young. The WP front row struggled against the Lions and the Sharks. Give him time he will get there.

And we really don’t need an u/21 Springbok side. :)

  16. The player that needs time out more than any other player is Morne Steyn ! ! !

  17. Seemingly HM wants to manipulate Lambie into cutting his ties with SA rugby. Lambie was selected as fullback for this tour and we all know what this will mean. Lambie will waste his time on this tour and the penny will drop for him, i.e. that Morne Steyn at his worst will still be preferred to him and Niknaks will be the fullback till he makes way for Taute.

  18. He really does hate English speaking players so dont expect to see a Keegan Daniel or tim Whithead and dont expect lambie to actually play. The J C snub astounds me!

    • Daniel goes missing in tight games and has yet to give a good performance for the Boks. However, we need a #12 to step up and I thought Whitehead did well now that he gets regular game time.
