Housekeeping – Don’t Jump The Gun!

July 2, 2012 in Housekeeping

“Vat jou goed en trek, Ferreira”

I think it is way to early to ring the alarm bells and run for the hills!

Yes, Sport24 changing blog platforms was not managed in the most effective way possible. Yes, the guys at Sport24 could have done tons of things to ensure a smoother move. Yes, there is loads of spam filtering through. Yes, it seems as though there was nothing wrong with the old system so why fix what ain’t broke? Yes, there is a bunch of confusing shit to figure out. Yes, we wait patiently for email updates again … and so the list goes on!

There are clearly a few problems with this platform right now but I for one have no problem with any organisation changing for the better (or perceived better) before what they currently have ends up broken. Why wait for it to break?

I reckon folks who move exclusively to the pure WordPress platform do not quite understand what they will be missing out on here as soon as all the bugs move aside. Anyone remember all the bitching and moaning (and all related ‘issues’) when moving to the Letterdash system?

What you will eventually get here is all the benefits of WordPress that Powa has been promoting, together with the benefit of remaining a community. Moving away from this platform might enable us all to huddle in a small group and have our say from time to time, whilst perhaps building a greater following of unknowns. Remember that this is also WordPress so once all is well (AND IT WILL BE) all will come crawling back because you can achieve the greater audience (if that’s what you’re after) as well as retain that wonderful sense of community.

For all you naysayers out there remember the wise words of General Eric Shinseki, Chief of Staff, U.S. Army:

“If you don’t like change, you’re going to like irrelevance even less!”

Housekeeping – Avoid Old Posts Feeding to “Latest Posts”

June 29, 2012 in Housekeeping

Right folks. An important piece of information for all bloggers wanting to edit their old posts (like add tags and categories) without those old posts then showing up in the “latest posts” feed. This seems to work. I tried it and the post in question stayed off the feed.

So McLook, this answers your question ;)

Go to Settings > Privacy > and then tick the box that reads “Ask search engines not to index this site.” > Save Changes.

Then edit to your hearts content without bombarding everyone with old stuff and change it back when you’re done.

Let us all know if this does not work. Seems to work for me. We’ll get there in the end!

How Recent are these post really?

June 27, 2012 in Housekeeping

I am certain we will all get used to how things work on this new platform and we’ll be better for it because, once you learn all about it, WordPress really is a phenomenal blogging platform.

I don’t think the guys at Media24 really thought it through though as to how they would actually implement this seamlessly!

The only reason I bring it up is not really to join the clan of bitchers and moaners, but rather to apologies upfront for old posts of mine coming up in the “Recent Blogs” list every time I go back and edit old posts, which needs to happen to a degree on the new platform.

I think there is a way to switch that off through the ‘Privacy’ settings so if anyone knows then please do share!

I am sure this will be back to normal soon as I really think we’ll end up with a better platform all-round!
