Cheetahs Rugby To Strengthen
June 7, 2012 in Rugby, School Rugby
Very interesting indeed to read of SARU’s latest regulations regarding the signing of promising schoolboy talent.
The obviously outcome is that this will simply postpone the inevitable but one can only imagine the strength of a Cheetah’s team that end up with players of this calibre remaining in their ranks (to mention but a few) …

Frans Steyn

Bismarck Du Plessis
Joe Pietersen

Ruan Pienaar

Flip Van Der Merwe
There are obviously many names to add to this list, but the Cheetahs will surely be a far more formidable force if given the opportunity to retain even a small percentage of the talent they don’t retain.
Thankfully, with all the talent in SA, either way it all amounts to a Bok team that many should and do fear!
Boks by 16 against the Poms this weekend.

O ja, forgot him. But sometimes he does do a lot of stupid things that makes me don’t want him back, almost like meyer bosman
thegreenman said on June 11, 2012
And don’t forget Flip vd Merwe
GUNTZ27 said on June 11, 2012
I agree, there is a lot of Grey schoolboys currently playing for the first team that is still in grade 11. Which could help the Cheetahs into a stronger team.
I always said that the Boks need the Cheetahs to be strong. And with this we could be

On the Bench you had Adriaan Strauss, Coenie and Pienaar from Grey college

The only thing that makes sense is that WP poached the white rugby schools and Maties in the olden days.
Nowadays Boland loses their good coloured players to these “WP” schools too, reducing their potential player pool
GHTr said on June 8, 2012
I didn’t realise that WP managed to poach them. It makes sense though. The smaller schools would have absolutely no chance of having a Cravenweek rep if this big 3 was still Boland.

Thanks Philistine

Yes, that is true. I was at School in Paarl and all the Paarl school were under WP and not Boland Rugby! Interestingly, around 16 of the players in the first All SA Superrugby final were from Boland schools origin, but played for Bulls and Sharks!

Most Springboks rugby players produced by school since 1906 – 2012

Grey College is a rugby factory, granted
thegreenman said on June 7, 2012
Baylion, as the figures above suggest, combined with the Bok team for the past eight years, Paarl / Stellenbosch still don’t contribute the numbers that Bloem does.

Monnas is a Lions school. Witbank is Pumas
Baylion said on June 7, 2012
GHT, tyhe schools you mention were poached by WP ages ago. They don’t fall under Boland for rugby, only for other sport.
Baylion said on June 7, 2012
Unfortunately Boland’s top rugby schools were poached by WP ages ago.
Baylion said on June 7, 2012
And the WP schools in Paarl and Stellenbosch.

Now look at the bench as well. You will find another 4 names from Grey Bloem. With Morne Steyn that makes it 8 players in Saturdays Match 22 from Bloem, 7 of which are from the same school. From these figures it seems again that the greatest beneficiary will be FS

Kirchner – PW Botha College (SWD)
Pieterson – Hoërskool Generaal Hertzog in Witbank (not sure what union)
de Villiers – Paarl Gym (Boland)
Steyn – Grey College (FS)
Habana – King Edward Vll School (Lions)
Steyn – Sand du Plessis (FS)
Hougaard – Paul Roos (Boland)
Spies – Afrikaans Boys High (Bulls)
Alberts – Monument High in Krugersdorp (not sure about the union)
Coetzee – Port Natal (Sharks)
Kruger – Paul Roos (Boland)
Etzebeth – Tygerberg High (WP)
du Plessis – Grey College (FS)
du Plessis – Grey College (FS)
Mtawarira – Peterhouse (Zim)
I am a little bit confused with JP Pietersen as I thought he went to school in Stellenbosch but seems like he was only born there.

Out of interest, do you know how many players from those schools combined feature in the Bok match 22 this Saturday?
GHTr said on June 7, 2012
Boland has got to be the union that will throw the biggest party tonight. They currently have the 2 Paarl schools, Paul Roos and Boland Landbou in the top 20. Sure they will not hold on to all these boys, but at least it is a start…

I deleted it. Was not happy with what I wrote myself, but thanks for asking. Having a bit of Blogger’s block at the moment!

Sorry to bug you LT but your latest blog wont open. Have you said something to get the blog admin’s backs up?
thegreenman said on June 7, 2012
Which I guess also means good things for the Cheetahs
Baylion said on June 7, 2012
“Unions are allowed to contract players only when they are over the age of 18 but they are allowed to offer academic bursaries to boys between the ages of 16 and 18″
This won’t stop the schools from recruiting players at a younger age though, only the unions, eg. Johan Goosen, William Small-Smith, Jan Serfontein, Paul Jordaan
Labachtanai said on June 7, 2012
That seems to be very good news for Free State, but maybe also for Boland who seems to be bleeding away every promising player they happen upon!
