Dear Western Province
I am a rugby fanatic who migrated to the beautiful Cape in 1999. Upon joining False Bay Rugby Club I was quickly absorbed into the Cape Rugby customs and traditions. I was mesmerized by stories of Bay players fronting up and standing their ground against the Mighty Maties, Villigers and UCT sides, loaded with WP players. These players got this occasional opportunity on their hallowed Newlands pitch.
This passed Saturday evening, the Stormers came up against a Sharks side on a mission. There will be no final at Newlands on 5 August 2012. This misfortune for WP can, and should be turned into opportunity to BRING CLUB RUGBY TO NEWLANDS!
Bringing the WP Clubs to Newlands is not always possible, however, WP have been gifted a great opportunity to do just that this coming weekend. Surly a couple of phone calls and simple arrangements can bring four of the Super A League, 1st Team sides to the Newlands. Maties vs Durb-Bell and UCT vs Hamilton are playing this coming weekend and these derby matches are almost always guaranteed to draw massive crowds.
The Super 15 final will be played on Saturday morning, leaving the afternoon open for what could be called a mini Rugby festival, at Newlands. These Super A matches are scheduled for Friday night, but simple amendment can shift them to Saturday afternoon.
Now for the main event:
Paarl Gimnasium vs Hoer Jongenskool Paarl . The rugby community’s biggest School Boy Derby (Paarl Gym vs Paarl Boys) is this weekend. What a great opportunity to bring these 2 great school boy rugby teams to Newlands. This school boy derby game attracts the biggest crowds for a schoolboy game in the world.
This is a once a season opportunity to show all the talent the Western Cape has. Western Province you have an opportunity to show the rest of South Africa, and Australia, what derby games truly are.
