Patrick Lambie will look to make the Nr 15 jersey his own this weekend. That’s the words of Heyneke Meyer ahead of the 2nd Test against the English at the Coke Tin.
We all know that Lambie is a very very talented player. He excelled at Fullback, Flyhalf and Inside Centre. Like many talented players before him, the Sharks has used this to it’s limits and I now believe that eventhough he is excellent in every one of those positions, he should now be used in only one, one that is in accordance to the National Selector.
At 15 he has a much better chance of playing rugby for club and country because of the immense amount of talent we have at Flyhalf. Morne Steyn the incumbent will be under pressure soon if he continues on this Hot and Cold streak, especially considering that Elton Jantjies is solid kicking for post but the very near future will see a change of guard when Johan Goosen takes up that berth. In no ways am I saying that Morne or Elton or even Lambie don’t deserve a chance in that position, but his is a talent none of us can ignore.
I can’t see them using Goosen anywhere else then flyhalf and if the Springboks are to really aim for World Domination, they should entrust these young players with the chance, but they need to be groomed into it. Lambie will play at the back and with him he will have two very experienced Springboks, when he joins the line from the back he will have two Centre’s who are also experienced. And that will help him develop into a better rugby player then he is now.
But where will that leave the Sharks?
The Sharks is my team. I love them and respect them, but I loath the silly spending they do sometimes. Perfect example is Marius Joubert. No disrespect to the guy, but he played great when he was with the Stormers, he continued and again rediscovered some form in France….why sign a 30 odd year old when you have the talented Paul Jordaan in your ranks?
I think that the time has come for the Sharks to either invest in a young player at 10, or buy a player from one of the other franchises. It’s a difficult position because not only are you looking for someone to come in, but you have to decide whether you want to play Ludik on Wing. I would even go as far as try to convert Viljoen or Ludik as a Flyhalf and have Lambie play Fullback on a permanent basis, should he get injured there will be enough players to cover.
So imagine this:
Heyneke and the Springboks have a friendly against Ireland in two years. They intend on resting some of their players but they assemble a young back line:
9 Hougaard
10 Goosen
11 Mvovo
12 Jordaan
13 Ebersohn
14 Le Roux
15 Lambie
Blerrieville…that backline would run circles.
Anyway that is my 2cents…..keep Lambie at Fullback for both Province and Country.

Agree for most,
Lambi definately as FB both in Boks and especially Sharks – he is good anyways, but if he plays regularly as FB in Sharks he will develop to be great. I agree with you future back line in many ways… I would however introduce Venter and Engelbrecht in the mix..

Good post! It’s quite a tough one to call because I really think both Lambie and Goosen are both flyhalf contenders, and it depends on what kind of rugby the Boks are going to be playing in the future. If we start moving towards a Cheetah’s style of running rugby (dare we??) then Goosen would be 1st choice, and probably Elton next.
Not that Lambie wouldn’t suit that game, but I think he’s more adaptable, as the Sharks tend to play somewhere in between the two very different styles represented by the Bulls and Cheetahs, and he plays well at 10 for them.
What I do like about him at 15 is he always seems to be in the right place on defence, and he seldom misses a tackle- as he says himself, everyone’s ankles are roughly the same size!

I think you hit the nail on the head, and your backline is not that bad, I like the centres with the Goose at ten an robert at 13 you bring a bit of continuity. le Roux is also a great asset because he could cover 10 & 15 as well.
But I would think a guy like Piet van Zyl, who is in the extended squad now. Would be starting if Goosen is the 10. I believe that is why he is in the group and heyneke likes playing combinations
That would be a nice backline, although I don’t expect HM to go with mainly youngsters, I think he will keep a few experienced guys in there, you’ve only got Hougaard and Lambie with experience. Expect 1 of the centers and/or 1 of the wings to be replaced by guys with more experience.
I can definately imagine your backline and I think it would be great, I just don’t see it as a reality.
And Lambie will still not be safe, as HM has remarked on the talent of Taute. Now, Taute is also quite good at outside centre, and he is big – so, some interesting times ahead.

I know this isnt quite a contradiction, however last week Ricardo Loubser was saying Lambies future was at flyhalf – yet now HM is indicating otherwise – a little concerning.
I know the franchise debate and positions is always a hot one but sometimes players do need to play in another position for the good of the team – only a few are talented enough to do it and luckily Lambie is one of them
Jordaan is 13/14 player and very selfish I would never play him at 12.
One can never predict a team so far into the future maybe in the next 2 years or so we get really good centres? Or even better wings?

You guys might not agree here but despite all the running flair at centre we currently have (and are mentioned here) imho the only classic nr 12 is Francios Venter. Straightening the line and creating opportunities outside. Doesn’t get a chance at the Bulls currently. I like Jordaan a lot- with a bit of coaching can cause problems for opposition teams for a long time…
