Kaptein, span die seile

A local song, if not mistaken sang  by Kurt Darren, and appreciated by over 20 000 spectators at a sold out Coetzenberg last night.

REM was fortunate enough to go watch the Maties against bitter rivals UCT to see who would win this years Varsity Cup.  We all know that Maties came out on top, well deserved win to a thrilling last period and push by the Tigers.  You could clearly see the jubilation on the faces of the Home Side’s supporters.  The signs are good for rugby in Cape Town and you will be sure to see some of these youngsters in action for the big unions soon.  Names like Adnaan Oesman, Danie Poolman, Charl Weideman, Josh Strauss,  Sam Mabombo, Matthew Dobson and Marinus Pretorius for Maties and Therlow Pietersen, Marcel Brache and Matthew Rosslee for the Tigers will be appearing on your radar soon enough.

REM finally met Tank Lanning and I must say it was a pleasure big guy.  Nick Mallettt had a few moments to spare and the ou, despite his son’s team(Doug Mallett plays 10 for Ikeys) losing, he was in good spirit.  Guess you get used to losing when coaching Italy.

Looking at the huge success of the competition and the growing reputation it gets, one would like to see the competition made more competitive.  Like a blogger on here said earlier, we could use with some KZN varsities competing at this level.  Surely each union can only benefit from something like this.  Only time will tell.

Till later

Everchaning Times

A song made famous by Mo Town singer Dionne Warrick during the 70’s.

Another weekend has come and gone and it had some satisfying outcomes for me as a supporter.  I would like to raise some points on what I thought was a rather quiet weekend:

The Sharks were really lucky to win the game.  Reason being is that they allowed the Canes to get back in it.  They started like a house on fire.  Like him or not but I think Ruan Pienaar had a cracker, good distribution, good all round kicking and attacked the advantage line with menace.  I feel though that the ball should have been kept through with the forwards more often.  Great kick in the end, although I feel that the media is pulling the whole thing out of proportion.  I really hope he doesn’t read to much into the situation and focus on his game, one day at a time.

This weekend sees the Red Devils take on the Blues.  In light of this both teams had to win, not just to ensure that they keep their title hopes alive but also go into the game as favorites.  Chelsea will be looking to keep their scoring alive with the likes of Lampard and Drogba, but in all honesty, they are facing a United team that is on a high after scoring four on the road against a resurgent Bolton team.  Rooney is on a high, scoring 18 in his last 15.  I feel United will have the psychological edge over the Blues, believe me I am not writing them off at all, I just know that Sir Alex gets the well oiled machine going this time of year.

Friday I posted a question on my blog and I must say I liked the outcome.  Seems that we have several blokes interested in hooking up at the Springbok France Game at Newlands.  Details will follow, as I still have to propose the plans to some people.  I would take this opportunity to ask Tank for his input.  He can inbox me so we can start the ball rolling.  This is just not about us ouens having a tjop and dop but marketing the brand of rugby and the Media 24 brand.  I have some ideas but you are more then welcome to put this to paper and let me know so we can come to some sort of agreement.

Lets stay Together

A song made famous by a preacher in the States, a icon in Soul entertainment, Reverend Al Green performed this song last year during the BET Music Awards where he won a Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to music.

So yet another weekend dawns.  Can the Sharks do it again even with a injury toll hanging over their heads?  I believe they can, if they stick to the game plan and just bloody finish the job.  The scrum looked a little better last week so lets hope for the best.  I have said that I have given up hope of play off’s this year but they can still help some other SA teams and start preparing for next year.  I say, in with the new, out with the old.

Manchester United will be looking to set the pace when they face Bolton away at the Reebok stadium.  Can they do it?  Off course they can.  They will be relishing the prospect of going into the Chelsea game with a win under their belts.  Even though they surely have the toughest run in to the Premier League title, they still are the best finishers in the League.

On to the matter I would like to discuss today.  Blogging on this site is something I rather enjoy.  To be able to put your thoughts to paper and have constructive arguments is a pastime that I seem to enjoy.  On here we have made friends and some foes and trying to put a face to the name is something we can do…in the future that is.  Now since we come from all walks of life and live in different provinces this should be a challenge.

When I started blogging, Sport24 had a “conference” where bloggers got to hang out and meet each other.  Now why don’t we arrange something to the same effect?  Will be difficult to do so if we far apart but we can start small, like for example in Cape Town.  There is quite a few of you out here, Uysh, Inside Centre, Willem to name a few.  And I know the perfect neutral venue people, Newlands.  It is a few months away but planning something of this magnitude can be quite tricky but wouldn’t it be great if we all got together for a dop and chop before the Bokke take on France?  Come on Tank even though we know how you look, we could use with some “muscle” behind the project!

Just a suggestion.  Others, from other provinces can fly in, if you like watching games live that is…..

What do you think?????

I will survive

The theme song for today’s post is just a simple reminder that through perseverance and hard work, the impossible can be achieved.  Gloria Gaynor first performed the song way back in 1978 and the song was later re invented by many superstars.

The song would in a way fit Tiger Woods.  The world number one is making his much anticipated return to golf at the Masters next month on a course where he has triumphed before.  A couple of practice sessions revealed that The “Eye of the Tiger” is definitely in and according to some he is driving the ball further which is a good sign.  No matter how much you banter about the oke, you still gotta love him.  I personally look forward to watching him win.

The next is a tale, that for me holds great significance in the world of sport.  As many would know, Julian Huxley, the former Wallaby and Brumbie fullback will be making his return to Super rugby this weekend after being named on the bench.  So after being told he has a brain tumor and making a full recovery to being cleared to play, Huxley will be watched closely.  I must say, I don’t fancy the Australians, just like I hate the English but you have give credit where it is due.  He will certainly be remembered down the years as the Boet that conquered his own brain to play rugby.  Good one chap, reminds me of Lance Armstrong, Dave Calaghan and many others that has weathered the storm to do what they love.

For that I salute you.

Smells like Teen Spirit-A Kaas Kwota update

Keeping in tune with REM’s topic policy, Kaas Kwota could not think of a proper topic.  Instead keeping in mind that our youngsters will be playing the Varsity Cup next week, the topic song made a group of coke addicts famous, Nirvana.

A roundup of sporting highlights as seen by Kaas:

After a rather lack luster performance from the Bulls, one has to ask whether they are cocky or just darn good?  I would say the latter but I would have liked to see a more attacking game.  Last year the Hurricanes gave the Sharks the best game of rugga in 80 minutes during their whole campaign.  They are a physical outfit and was in the game until the end.  Good win for the BB’s as they embark on their overseas tour today.  On a lighter note, did anyone notice the horrible state Loftus is in?  Can this be due to soccer being played in the week?

The Sharks finally won.  A tired Highlanders team was always going to be a prerequisite for the Durban based union.  They now face the Hurricanes and I believe that they should be able to win this as well.  Last year I watched Patrick Lambie play in the under 21 Currie Cup and he has shown great promise.  Saturday he was steady under the high ball and looked like he has been doing it for years.  I wonder (since he is a utility back) how he will fare in the pivotal position?  Reminds me of a young Frans Steyn when he broke into the first team.

A rivalry that is over 100 years old was rekindled yesterday.  Manchester came out on top in a game that was started early with a excellent goal from Torres.  United replied in kind and the gamewinner from Park took something excellent.  Well deserved win for the team.  Also a big thank you for Chelsea and Diouff who drew their game on Sunday.  This will go down to the wire and shows why the EPL is the best league in the world.

One day in your life

Like certain bloggers starting their blogs off with a specific sentence from history, I shall attempt to do so with the title of a song fitting the post content.  The topic for today is “One day in your life” sang by Michael Jackson.

Now in world football there is one day that has significance to over 500million people.  They tune in to watch a spectacle, a day where passion, fury and the love for the game is shown on many levels.  Manchester United versus Liverpool is a game that you don’t have to explain if you know the complete history of the two teams.

Liverpool will be itching to take a double over United but the form that United has shown off late gives me hope that this will be one for the ages.  Sir Alex will know exactly how to motivate the ouens and this will be the perfect opportunity for Rooney to show his class.  Don’t get me wrong, I have always had respect for Liverpool and I admire Torres. He is a hardworker and I would say that he and Rooney would make the perfect strike pair.

The battle in the midfield will be crucial.  United has scored way more goals and mostly all of this comes from counter attack football, something they do well.  I would love to see Scholes stamping down his authority.  You get the feeling that himself, Giggs and Neville are playing some of the best football of their careers which is a good thing, rubbing of that Ferguson qualities onto your younger generation.

United by 2 is my scoreline.  Since this fixture is always played mid afternoon, due to huge amounts of alcohol consumption at these games and by these fans, REM signs out with his motto, F@k Fear, drink beer.

PS:  Last year I tried my hand at an extensive history and why these clubs hate each other so much.  If you looking for that info, try Wikipedia or Google it!
