2013 SuperRugby Jerseys now available!!!

October 12, 2012 in rugby, super 15

With the SARU ruling that the EP Kings will replace the Lions in next years 2013 SuperRugby Championship, there has been much rumour and speculation about which Lions players are going where. Judging by the ‘unnoficial’ reports, it looks like the bulk of the Lions players will be going to the Stormers and the Sharks. If these reports are to be believed, I feel it is only right for these Unions to incorporate the Lions colours and logo into their 2013 SuperRugby jerseys.

Jantjies to play for Stormers in 2013

October 2, 2012 in rugby, sport, super 15

Newly capped Springbok flyhalf and hot star Elton Jantjies has signed a loan agreement to play for the Stormers in next year’s Super Rugby tournament.

Jantjies, who made his Test debut in the past weekend’s 31-8 win over Australia, has a clause in his current contract with the Lions that allows him to play Super Rugby for another franchise if the Johannesburg-based team is relegated from the competition.

The Cape Times has established that Jantjies has finally decided to come to Cape Town next year and play for the Stormers, after he was also courted by the Sharks.

WP and Stormers coach Allister Coetzee said yesterday that while he had not yet received confirmation that the 22-year-old would be joining his team next year, he was hopeful that it could happen.

Before the Currie Cup started I did say that the Lions were the team to watch in the CC but I never expected to see the Eighth placed Bulls to be there.

What is the problem with this super power of rugby. They have Heineke Meyer back as their Director of rugby and all things beautiful, they had 7 or 8 Bokke come back from a tour but they still lose to a Lions team that has only one questionable Bok in the team.

The Sharks get walloped even after bringing on all the Bok replacements by a very motivated Griquas team but still Griquas! Huh!

The Stormers were stupidly undisciplined and deserved to lose a game that they had in the bag. The Cheetahs were the only team to benefit from the return of their Springboks.

Is this only proving the point that these returning players aren’t as good as we think and that the depth in SA rugby is actually quite shallow or are these players psychologically in a slump after taking a couple of hidings against Aus and ABs.

Big guns back for Springboks

Headlines in the Age in Aus!

My question is “Will these big guns shoot blanks”

Some other questions that need answers

Are our players mentally and physically strong enough to handle the pressure of all this top drawer rugby?

Do the sports psychologists prepare these players properly?

Do our players need to spend more time with the hand/eye coordinator coaches to improve their skills?

Then this year comes along and guess what’s happening? Bulls at the bottom and the Boks draw and lose more than they win.

Nothing much! Even with new coaches and players. Not a pretty picture!

Boks tweaking gameplan

September 22, 2012 in currie cup, rugby, sport, springboks, super 15

The HP manager is Rassie Erasmus. By the way.

Saru’s High Performance Manager admitted that the Springboks’ much-maligned kick-and-chase approach has been gradually losing its efficiency in recent seasons.

He was quick to add, however, that the Boks should not veer from their conservative gameplan but rather make minor changes to add more strings to their bow.

Read the whole article then come back and voice your opinion.

via iafrica.com | sport | today | Boks tweaking gameplan.

I don’t know what the relationship is between HP manager and Head coach or who is higher on the totem pole but it is encouraging to see or hear someone admit that our present game plan needs tweaking.

If you read the article further you will see what I also believe is the root cause of our problems. Burnout!! Yes folks Burnout!

By the time our players have finished playing the Super 15 they are exhausted and burned out and stale. No matter how much you love the game and enjoy watching or playing Saturday after Saturday, you have to admit that there is currently, just too much rugby.

Straight from Super rugby (With some tests thrown into the mix) the top players go into an extended Tri nation, Champions cup and then on to an end of year tour.

It is no wonder that the injury lists are so high. Bodies can only take so much abuse before breaking down.

Central contracts allowing player management to take control instead of money, will go a long way to strengthening our national team and increase the playing time of all bench/fringe players.

Brains must overcome greed and the National team must be able to dictate player game time or restrictions on playing time must be introduced and monitored.

Will the Lions v Kings playoff take place?

September 21, 2012 in rugby, sport, super 15

Eyewitness News reported on Thursday that the Kings have asked Saru for special dispensation to field more than the regulation two foreign players.

Saru confirmed that the regulation across all Sanzar countries – South Africa, New Zealand and Australia – are that only two foreigners per franchise are allowed.

However, there is a principle for special dispensation in Australia – where the Rebels were allowed 10 foreigners in their first season, to be reduced annually over five years, while the Western Force had their quota increased to three for 2013.

InSouth Africa the Sanzar executive committee – not the full council – will make this call and they will consider the “request” at their next meeting.

Personally, I don’t have a problem with it. I don’t think many players will want to sign for one year only, but that remains to be seen.

This whole scenario still reeks of incompetence and I am sure the putrefaction at SARU will increase the stench at the end of Super 15, 2013.

Who will go and who will stay, contracts, fees and under counter payments will be made and someone will want to sue another and the whole vat of threat and counter threat will start all over again and in all likelihood will carry on until 2015 when SANZAR can review it’s TV deal.

Will the promised playoff take place or will the goalposts  be moved once again?

I’m too stupid or maybe too clever to guess, so you tell me.

Lions seek Super alternative

September 13, 2012 in rugby, sport, super 15

Now we’re talking. Stuff Super Rugby after 2015. Start another competition with less travelling etc. NH teams playing here good show.

Golden Lions Rugby Union President Kevin de Klerk believes his union could pave the way for a possible alternative competition to Super Rugby for South Africa.

Stormers take SA conference early.

July 9, 2012 in rugby, sport, super 15

The Stormers clinched the South African conference to join the Chiefs in the Super 15 finals, with six other teams fighting for the remaining four playoff spots after this weekend’s round.

Stormers struggled to beat the Cheetahs in a game where at times I felt both teams were trying to bore the opposition into submission. The weather also played a big part on a game that should have been recorded as a tool for insomniacs to use in times of need.

SBW sold the Chiefs down the river when he failed to pass to an overlap that could have cantered over with players to spare.

The Brumbies need one point from next Saturday’s home game with the lowly Auckland Blues to clinch the Australian conference and the third ranking spot in the playoffs. Jake White seems to have done a great job with these youngsters.

Crusaders are still in it and can quite easily go on to win the competition for the umpteenth time. They never seem to be far from the front runners.

The Sharks deservedly beat a lackluster Bulls team and this game raised some serious doubts in my mind about some players. Hougaardt seems to have an Achilles heel at the base of the scrum. He is often too slow in clearing when his team is on the backfoot, with kicks being charged down and being caught in possession. Morne Steyn has had a bad season generally with his kicks out of hand and at poles even though he is the top points scorer he could have done so much better. I don’t expect Meyer to change or bench him just yet. Spies was shown up for the umpteenth time when he was totally outclassed by a rampant Kankowski who played the best game I have ever seen him play. It is such a pity that he is so inconsistent. As for the Potgieter loosies, I think HM will have to make up his mind with difficult choices. Dewald is good but not better than some others, while Jacque is a far cry from his pre injury standard. Kolisi would have caused havoc as did Keegan Daniel. There are better players in the Bok squad for the Champions cup (Stupid name in my opinion). On this weekends performance I can see why Bis du Plessis is the no1 hooker. He was immense and was close to man of the match for me.

I know that winning games is always the main goal for any team, but going on the Stormers defensive choke the life out of the opposition brand of rugby, I don’t think they are good enough to win this competition. The loose forward combination is suspect with Kolisi carrying the load. Having to make do with makeshift combinations for a large part of this competition I think they are lucky to have done this well. The young tighthead Malherbe has been shown up in the scrums and he needs another year or three before he could deserve the praise he gets from some quarters. I’m also not overly convinced that flank is the right position for Elstadt. I preferred him at 4.

Lions mull overseas tournament as Super rugby limbo drags on

July 6, 2012 in rugby, sport, super 15

THE decision on which five franchises will participate in Super Rugby next year looks set to be dragged out further following revelations yesterday that the South African Rugby Union’s Saru’s general council meeting has been postponed until further notice.Saru’s top brass was expected to meet with the bosses of the 14 provincial unions next Friday to finalise the way forward in Super Rugby after the decision to include the Kings in the series next season was ratified by the provinces.

Weekend wobbly

June 28, 2012 in rugby, sport, super 15

OK, so I’m over this new blogging platform which I think is pathetic in its present format, but I can’t bitch and moan all the time. That’s not my nature.

Another OK, so can someone please explain to me how or why Paul Adams was appointed as the Cobras coach. What is his track record and list of achievements that qualifies him for this post? Don’t get me wrong, I’ve got nothing against Paul, I am just not sure that he is the right man for the job.

On to Saturday, the Cheetahs are going to play out of their skins but I don’t think that they will be strong enough to beat the Bulls at Loftus. It will be long and it will be hard (Get your minds out of the gutter) and they’ll never give up!

Stormers are going to rain all over the Lions parade just to add to their woes. It is such a pity to see such rugby stalwarts falling apart at the seams.

As for the Sharks, they need to rest as much as they can because they need to be strong to accept two defeats and being knocked out of the comp.
