Bekker jou doring!!!

March 25, 2013 in rugby, sport, super 15

Before the game even started I was a bit worried about the outcome and thought that the Stormers were going to struggle against a very good Brumbies team, but after the first ten minutes I started to relax and enjoy the game.

A few of the guys that stood out for me were,

Andries Bekker who is back to his brilliant best,

Jean de Villiers who is outstanding at 12 but only mediocre at 13, why they insist on him at 13, I have no idea, I can’t think of any reason that makes sense.

Aplon was his usual slippery self until knocked senseless by the Brumbies huge no8. Aplon, de Jongh and Jantjies were targeted by the big Brumbies loosies, but they took the hits and clung on for dear life until help arrived.

There was nobody that played really badly except for Taute who was obviously rusty.

Cheers Brumbies,

Kings were  outclassed as expected. (I foresee a moving of the goal posts before the end of the season promo relegation games.)

Maybe they will combine with the Rebels and become the Rebings or the Kebels or something :)

Bulls looked lost and bewildered and got beaten by the Reds.  Super Cooper seems to think it’s his own private game and the other 14 are just there to make up the numbers. I think the Reds would be better without him.

Cheetahs have won three away games for the first time which is great but lets be fair and honest Force, Waratahs and Hghlanders are not nearly as strong as the teams they still have to play as the Sharks and Chiefs have shown, and now there is no Goosen (Smit is a very good player but not as good).

Sharks destroyed the Rebels, which once again highlights the fact that Oz rugby is too weak to warrant 5 teams in the competition. They are spread too thin.

Goosen compared to Carter

March 14, 2013 in rugby, sport, super 15

t may be to add more pressure onto his young shoulders, but Toyota Cheetahs flyhalf Johan Goosen was paid the ultimate compliment when one of New Zealand’s leading rugby magazines asked the question on their cover this week – “Is this the new Dan Carter?”

The 20-year old Goosen, currently in Sydney with his teammates as they prepare for their Vodacom Super Rugby match against the Waratahs on Friday, was given the honour by New Zealand Rugby magazine, Rugby News, who used the comparison to Carter, a World Cup winner and World Rugby player of the year, as the future of South African rugby.

Bekker you beauty

March 10, 2013 in rugby, sport, super 15

Now that’s the Bekker I know and remember. His performance on Saturday was inspirational and played a big part in motivating the rest of the team. Well done Stormers …… Great game!  An expensive win though.

The Stormers victory over the Chiefs has come at a price as they have lost winger Bryan Habana to injury for 10 weeks.

Habana was stretchered off the pitch in the 55th minute of the match after being tackled by Sam Cane and fell awkwardly.

The Stormers have revealed that they think he has injured his Medial collateral ligament (MCL) which is an injury to the ligament on the inner part of the knee and the ligament keeps the shin bone (tibia) in place.

Cheetahs and Bulls stuffed my Superbru and the Kings joined the Stormers as the top two defensive teams.

Sharks will get their bums kicked by the Brumbies if they produce the same lackluster game as the last three. They need to score tries and not just defend themselves into a coma.

2013 SuperRugby Jerseys now available!!!

October 12, 2012 in rugby, super 15

With the SARU ruling that the EP Kings will replace the Lions in next years 2013 SuperRugby Championship, there has been much rumour and speculation about which Lions players are going where. Judging by the ‘unnoficial’ reports, it looks like the bulk of the Lions players will be going to the Stormers and the Sharks. If these reports are to be believed, I feel it is only right for these Unions to incorporate the Lions colours and logo into their 2013 SuperRugby jerseys.

Why the Cheetahs lost

September 23, 2012 in currie cup, rugby, sport

Naka Drotske and his co-selectors are the reason the Cheetahs lost on Saturday.

How on earth can you leave players like Sias Ebersohn and Strauss on the bench and start with a scrumhalf at flyhalf? It just does not make any sense.

Sias has more flair in his little finger than de Bruyn can rustle up in a month and this became pretty obvious when he replaced de Bruyn in the second half. If the reason to bench these two players was because they have signed contracts elsewhere for the new year the coach and selectors should be fired for the pure puerility of their decision. Childish tit for tat or sheer spite was merely plain stupidity on their part and they should answer for this monumental stuff up.

If the Cheetahs are forced to play a relegation match and perhaps get knocked out these gentlemen are or will be the root cause for their downfall.

Boks tweaking gameplan

September 22, 2012 in currie cup, rugby, sport, springboks, super 15

The HP manager is Rassie Erasmus. By the way.

Saru’s High Performance Manager admitted that the Springboks’ much-maligned kick-and-chase approach has been gradually losing its efficiency in recent seasons.

He was quick to add, however, that the Boks should not veer from their conservative gameplan but rather make minor changes to add more strings to their bow.

Read the whole article then come back and voice your opinion.

via iafrica.com | sport | today | Boks tweaking gameplan.

I don’t know what the relationship is between HP manager and Head coach or who is higher on the totem pole but it is encouraging to see or hear someone admit that our present game plan needs tweaking.

If you read the article further you will see what I also believe is the root cause of our problems. Burnout!! Yes folks Burnout!

By the time our players have finished playing the Super 15 they are exhausted and burned out and stale. No matter how much you love the game and enjoy watching or playing Saturday after Saturday, you have to admit that there is currently, just too much rugby.

Straight from Super rugby (With some tests thrown into the mix) the top players go into an extended Tri nation, Champions cup and then on to an end of year tour.

It is no wonder that the injury lists are so high. Bodies can only take so much abuse before breaking down.

Central contracts allowing player management to take control instead of money, will go a long way to strengthening our national team and increase the playing time of all bench/fringe players.

Brains must overcome greed and the National team must be able to dictate player game time or restrictions on playing time must be introduced and monitored.

Stormers take SA conference early.

July 9, 2012 in rugby, sport, super 15

The Stormers clinched the South African conference to join the Chiefs in the Super 15 finals, with six other teams fighting for the remaining four playoff spots after this weekend’s round.

Stormers struggled to beat the Cheetahs in a game where at times I felt both teams were trying to bore the opposition into submission. The weather also played a big part on a game that should have been recorded as a tool for insomniacs to use in times of need.

SBW sold the Chiefs down the river when he failed to pass to an overlap that could have cantered over with players to spare.

The Brumbies need one point from next Saturday’s home game with the lowly Auckland Blues to clinch the Australian conference and the third ranking spot in the playoffs. Jake White seems to have done a great job with these youngsters.

Crusaders are still in it and can quite easily go on to win the competition for the umpteenth time. They never seem to be far from the front runners.

The Sharks deservedly beat a lackluster Bulls team and this game raised some serious doubts in my mind about some players. Hougaardt seems to have an Achilles heel at the base of the scrum. He is often too slow in clearing when his team is on the backfoot, with kicks being charged down and being caught in possession. Morne Steyn has had a bad season generally with his kicks out of hand and at poles even though he is the top points scorer he could have done so much better. I don’t expect Meyer to change or bench him just yet. Spies was shown up for the umpteenth time when he was totally outclassed by a rampant Kankowski who played the best game I have ever seen him play. It is such a pity that he is so inconsistent. As for the Potgieter loosies, I think HM will have to make up his mind with difficult choices. Dewald is good but not better than some others, while Jacque is a far cry from his pre injury standard. Kolisi would have caused havoc as did Keegan Daniel. There are better players in the Bok squad for the Champions cup (Stupid name in my opinion). On this weekends performance I can see why Bis du Plessis is the no1 hooker. He was immense and was close to man of the match for me.

I know that winning games is always the main goal for any team, but going on the Stormers defensive choke the life out of the opposition brand of rugby, I don’t think they are good enough to win this competition. The loose forward combination is suspect with Kolisi carrying the load. Having to make do with makeshift combinations for a large part of this competition I think they are lucky to have done this well. The young tighthead Malherbe has been shown up in the scrums and he needs another year or three before he could deserve the praise he gets from some quarters. I’m also not overly convinced that flank is the right position for Elstadt. I preferred him at 4.

Weekend wobbly

June 28, 2012 in rugby, sport, super 15

OK, so I’m over this new blogging platform which I think is pathetic in its present format, but I can’t bitch and moan all the time. That’s not my nature.

Another OK, so can someone please explain to me how or why Paul Adams was appointed as the Cobras coach. What is his track record and list of achievements that qualifies him for this post? Don’t get me wrong, I’ve got nothing against Paul, I am just not sure that he is the right man for the job.

On to Saturday, the Cheetahs are going to play out of their skins but I don’t think that they will be strong enough to beat the Bulls at Loftus. It will be long and it will be hard (Get your minds out of the gutter) and they’ll never give up!

Stormers are going to rain all over the Lions parade just to add to their woes. It is such a pity to see such rugby stalwarts falling apart at the seams.

As for the Sharks, they need to rest as much as they can because they need to be strong to accept two defeats and being knocked out of the comp.
