Nine or the bench – Hougaard

Springbok utility back Francois Hougaard wants to play only scrumhalf next season and admits that he would rather play off the bench for the Boks if it meant he could put all his focus into improving in the number nine jersey.
In a refreshingly open interview with the Keo.co.za website, Hougaard admitted to feeling frustrated by his move to the wing this season for the Boks, after starting the season in his preferred position of scrumhalf.

He better improve on his box kicking or he won’t even be on the bench. Why do coaches persist in playing players in positions that they don’t want to play. If he is not wanted at 9 leave him out!

Finally a player with balls, if Brent Russel had this much conviction at the start of his career, things might have turned out differently for him.
Good on you Hougie, I hope you can get that nr 9 game down, Pienaar is also around the 30′s.

Can’t agree more he has been short shifted by the Bulls and Boks.
He lost a lot of time that could have developed his game by now.
I just hope it isn’t to late for the boy. Youngster with more all round game are coming through. Esp young Piet, the fact that he will be playing with Goosen will also help the youngster.

I thought that FdP had him under his wing, but it does not look like a lot of development took place there. That said Hougie is a shadow of the player he was during last year’s World Cup whether on wing or scrumhalf. As a winger he is a creator not a ball-chaser.
