Who will play flyhalf

September 25, 2012 in rugby, sport, springboks

Many will have welcomed the addition of Lions flyhalf Elton Jantjies to Heyneke Meyer’s group for the last part of the home leg of The Castle Rugby Championship — but only the next few days will tell us whether it was a meaningful move.

As the Springbok coach himself pointed out after making the announcement of the 30-man squad, Jantjies was part of the group that gathered for the England series that started his tenure. But he didn’t play any meaningful role, and with Morne Steyn still in the squad selected for the matches against Australia in Pretoria on Saturday and then the All Blacks at FNB Stadium in Soweto the following week, there is no guarantee he will play now either.

Realistically we have no chance of winning this competition so I think it’s time to give some youngsters a run.

I personally would like to see Steyn and Kirchner fully rested for this weekend’s game with Goosen starting and Jantjies on the bench. Lambie starting at 15 with Taute on the bench.

I would like to see the bench players come on for the last 20 minutes.

  1. So the boss says it is okay to throw Gio Aplon and a couple of others away, but not Morne Steyn. In Bok rugby you are supposed to get dropped if you play like a palooka. It is actually very unfair if you do not pick your in form players. Especially after you gave Mr OUT of Form a handfull of chances. Come on Heyneke , wake up and smell the discontent in the country and under even old die hard Blue Bull supporters.

  2. Well it now looks like Goosen’s slight injury will give HM the excuse he wanted to keep Steyn in the starting 15.
The other thing is why HM and his staff see Zane as a Spingbok.
There will prob only be injury enforced changes. Sad but true

The thing is as we are playing at altitude the Boks may actually win this game against a depleted Aus side. HM will then declare his selections and GP as a sucsess.

    • If I remember correctly he said they understood his game plan perfectly. Both are kick, chase exponents

  3. It makes sense to try and play the youngsters but then again Meyer has made the point that there are only two kinds of rugby – winning and losing. Now with that in mind Meyer obviously thinks that Morné is a winner, even if he proves Meyer wrong every time. I think if Goosen wasn’t nursing a bruised heel he would have started but other than that I see the exact same team play this weekend bar Frans. I agree that JdV will be 12 and JdJ 13, but then again Meyer doesn’t rate Juan so he might actually go with Taute at 13. Will see

  4. If Frans can’t play I would play de Jongh at 13 and put JdV at 12

    • I will be surprised if Taute starts but the youngster is very mature for him age and has two years of Super Rugby behind him already even if he’s only 21

  5. Goosen seems to have a slight injury but should be ready and Frans Steyn is also a worry. As I commented on my post, Elton & Morne was swapping in practice yesterday with Taute playing at 12.

We’ll have to see if Goosen and Frans is declared fit.
