The Lions Post Super 15?

May 29, 2012 in Uncategorized

Whilst everybody is going on about the Kings/Lions debacle and are also very much concentrating on the Incoming Tests as well as the last few games of Super Rugby, I am looking forward to what lies beyond all this.

I am particularly interested in the Lions Currie Cup campaign.

Having seen the Springbok Squad and yes I know it needs to be trimmed down still, you note that not many Lions players are included. The same could be said about the Cheetahs but I am concentrating on the Lions for now.

Are they favourites along with the Cheetahs and maybe Province (after the Vodacom Cup) to defend their title? I think they might!

Yes, the Bulls, Stormers and Sharks have almost all their players playing for the Boks and Yes one can argue that that is the reason the Lions won the Currie Cup last season, but, their name is on the Cup and in 10 years’ time nobody would ask how they won it.

I hope they win it again this year just to show SARU and their cronies what idiots they are and give them a BIG middle finger.

  1. FYI, in 2010 the Sharks won the CC in a Bok-depleted year and they’ve already forgotten that fact. :)

As to the Lions, as bad as our Super Rugby campaign went we’ve blooded a number youngsters who haven’t even played CC yet so that will stand us in good stead come the 2012 Currie Cup.

Last year the same match 22 played SR and CC and we had very little depth. This year we definitely have more depth, especially as most of our senior players are expected to be back for the CC.

  2. My thoughts as well. Will be EPIC if we could win it again. I like how all the Stormer, Bulls and Sharks supporters moan…

  3. Lol, Seeing as my teams fortunes crashed and burned when the Golden Goose got injured, and Sias decided it was a good time to lose all shape and confidence, alas, the CC is all I have to look forward to as well.

Yes, injuries are sometimes a blessing in disguise, as the depth gets expanded.

Cheetahs will also look good in the CC, and I think will do better than last year.

Coenie, Marcel vd Merwe, Strauss, Liebenberg, Nyakane, Ross Geldenhuys, Ferreira, Uys, Waltie Vermeulen, Brussow, Lappies, Boom Prinsloo, Raubenheimer, vd Walt, Dies v Schalkwyk.

Piet van Zyl, Sareltjie Petoors, Goosen, Sias, Strauss, Snyman, Ebersohn, le Roux, Jacobs, Burger, Benjamin, Daniller, Smit, and Scheepers.

    Fairly well settled imo

  4. I see Sias signed a two year deal to play for the Force. But that won’t affect the CC

  5. Heinrich and possibly Coenie and Adriaan may not get much CC playing time.

  6. Le Roux is at Griquas

  7. Oh boy, forgot about that. But Scheepers is also a good player, as is Smit, but le Roux is a gem

  8. I guess it’s possible, but Beast seems to be the preffered choice at LH, even so Marcel was sublime in the CC last year. Liebenberg and PW van Vuuren are good replacements, and well Sias has had a dreadful run, so right now we won’t miss him lol. Ok, we are a bit thin at FH then. Goosen and Riaan Smit

  9. Cheetah4eva, im also a cheetah fan and im fearing al these signings is a sign that the lions are staying in SR and we are going to lose out

  10. But I agree, Willie Le Roux is one of the most talented players ive seen in a long while with the exception of Goosen. I Really wish we could have those two in our backline for 5years.

  11. Currie cup is a different ball game than S15. Bulls, Sharks and WP will have a few Boks missing and there will be more injuries to top S15 and Bok players. The Cheetahs and Lions should be impressive.
