CC – First Division and the EP Kings.

The first division competition of the Currie Cup kicked off last weekend.

The 2012 season will see the competition expanded from six to eight teams, leaving  the Premier division with only 6 teams. The Leopards and Pumas thus join the first division in this year’s competition.

With the pending inclusion in the 2013 Super 15, it is important for the EP Kings to do well  this year and take that momentum into the 2013 campaign.

EP won the first division 2010 and lost in the final in 2011.

In a replay of last year’s final EP Kings faced Boland in Wellington in Week 1.

After dominating the first 40 with superb territorial  play the EP Kings took the foot of the pedal and allowed Boland back into the game in the second 40. The Kings held on for a 25-20 win with tries from George Whitehead, Cornell du Preez, and SP Marais to the two tries scored by Jacquin Jansen for Boland.

This weekend the Kings will play fellow Sothern Kings Franchise partners SWD. By all accounts this is a game the Kings should take easily.

In the other matches Border take in the Valke at home, and it could go either way, if I had to choose I’ll go with Valke. Pumas take on Boland, I expect they will pip the defending champs and I expect the Leopards will win against the underperforming Griffons.

Spare a thought for Kurt Coleman now playing for SWD after being part of the Stormers team for 2 seasons, how cruel the game can be.

In other exciting news local boy Michael Killian returns to EP after a number of years with the Lions.

 Come on Kings!

Last week the Pumas lost to fellow CC demotees the Leopards. Will be interesting to see how those two teams perform against the “lesser” teams….
