Cheetahs confirm signing of Sadie

The Vodacom Cheetahs have confirmed the acquisition of Johann Sadie. It seems like Sadie will represent the Cheetahs from 2013 Superugby competition. He has signed a two year contract.

    • I think Sadie will play at inside and robert outside, it could be lethal. I have heard rumours saying robert going to inside but he is a bit small for that but we will see.

You already have Paul Jordaan and Piet Lindique from us dont get greedy! And anyway where is Tim Whitehead going to go or is Robert only going to sit on your bench and dont play like you guys did with Jacques-Louis Potgieter, Riaan Viljoen? I mean these guys played well with us and started but you lured them away and now they are just handling tackle bags!

      • for me Sadie is a specialist outside centre. but I guess the conversion to inside wouldn’t be that tough, remember he also played a bunch of games on the wing at Province from the bench, so I guess he would be a huge addition no matter where he is played, he’s a good player, and the attacking brand of rugby may just suit him. it can’t be disputed, he’s a great signing.

        • Well I think Sadie and Robert could switch a lot through the games, Robert played inside at School as well as Fullback. But I just think he Sadie will be better at inside at the Cheetahs. But we will see.

I also think he is a good signing, at the Cheetahs he will get game time.

  1. according to my informants at WPRU, the recent actions of Sadie was the exactly the reason WP did not fight to keep him when the Bulls approached him.

He is apparently a bit of “moan gat” he throws his toys when not treated like a “star”, thus is premature departure from the Bulls,… good luck Cheetahs

    • Well I can imagine why he did this. He doesn’t get the game time he was promised by the Bulls. He does not fit into their playing style at all. There is two reasons already.

But lets start, he was at WP and played behind J Fourie, JDV, JDJ, Tim Whitehead. He then decides there isn’t enough place for him to gaurantee playing and money talks (1.4mil a season), so he went to the Bulls.

Got there he played 2-3 games and did not fit into the structures and picked up a injury, game plan did not suit him and ended with him being behind WO, JJ, Francois Venter in the pecking order and with Serfontein, Swanepoel and Small Smith (Don’t know where are all these guys gonna play for the Bulls, the are not going to get game time either and waste their own talent). To be frank he would always have struggled to get the game time he wanted. Its a great career move, he will play, he will get more down to earth. He will be in a place that suits his style of play where he can mature into a great player we all think he can be.

      • Owww…with that attitude he is destined to go the same route as Sias…. ;)

He needs to come down to earth maybe. And why did the Bulls then pay hims such an amount of money if they had no use for him?

I just think he is a journey man and until someone kicks his ass good and proper he won’t be loyal to any team.

His comments in the media after he left the Bulls were a bit sour towards WP and I can imagine if he is going to go overseas sometime, he will be another Rathbone/KP….

        • haha could be the case, but I am hoping that it is not.

If there is a team that suit him it will be the Cheetahs, he can become a star there.

He needs to mature as a person and get his head straight otherwise he will never reach his true potential. Lets hope for his sake he did that now.

His decision makes sense to me and I feel it is in his best interest.

I think Sias is a bit different, the guy has a bit of an ego but he has stayed in the same city forever and I think for him to mature more as a person he needs to go elsewhere, it will help his rugby too.

I think both cases is a case of growing up and I just hope both of these two’s decisions will help them with that because they have talent and should not waste it because of their ego’s!

    • Yes, I heard that as well but don’t know if that happened. But I think its a great career move and it really bolsters the Cheetahs. Imagine a backline of Van Zyl, Goosen, Le Roux, Sadie, Ebersohn, Benjamin, Daniller.

  2. Sadie has a few problems (and this was mentioned to me by some WP back room staff way back when)

One of them is that doesnt always play well with others, and has a bit of an entitlement attitude (He wanted the 13 jersey guaranteed in his contract with WP, when Rassie refused, up to the Bulls he went).

He’s was also afraid come hit time. In 2011 he lost the ball in almost every tackle he carried it into. Aparrently this was fixed by the Bulls’ head shrink, but he still has issues defensively.

Playing him at 12 is therefore an option, but only if you want to start talking about the Bloemfontein Freeway again. I’d guess Naka plans on moving Robert to 12 where he played most of his junior rugby.

As someone who has only ever seen the Ebersohn at school level on TV or youtube, I kind of get the feeling that they were physically bigger than their peers at that time. If you look at the clips Robert looks like one of the tallest guys in the backline.

When a player is large at junior level, he tends to to develop bad habits (ie running into players, not around them) and uses his size to tackle.

Ebersohn is smart (as is JDJ) and tends to hit ankles most of the time, but this opens you up to the offload from your skilled ball carrier running into the 2/3 channel on the second phase.

Also, he tends to concede meters on the hit (Sadie has the same problem in the 3 games his played this year), and to have your IC concede meters when your not rushing means that your always going to beo n the back foot.

What I do know is that Robert’s contract was attached to Sias’ contract (As with the du Plessis brothers). With Sias leaving, this might imply that he is also looking elsewhere, especially since he’s about number 4-5 in the Bok OC pecking order, and HM has a big crush on Jan Serfontein.

Sadie will only join the Cheetahs so late because they dont have the money available in their budget for this year. They also can’t really afford him for next year, but if he adds the 7′s contract (which will see him miss out on the preseason and maybe a bit of SR) he should earn what his salary is at the Bulls.

This is the kid HM said he would write down first if he was Pitere de Villiers for his squad for the RWC. Now the Bulls aren’t even asking a transfer fee.

    • You make valid points there, as we have seen the Cheetahs does not need a defender cause they usually don’t defend haha. But on a serious note I think defense is something anyone can do your not born being one its in the head.

With Rob Ebersohn, I know that the brothers want to play with each other but I know Robert still studies and he has a Girlfriend in bloem who is also a student and he recently started building a house. So I think he will stay untill his contract expires.

I think the Bulls does not want Sadie to go, can you imagine the Cheetahs CC backline to be Van Zyl, Goosen, Sadie (for interstings sake), Strauss/Geel, Ebersohn, Benjamin, Daniller. That would be lethal or it could be Van Zyl, Goosen, Benjamin, Sadie, Ebersohn (or other way around), Scheepers and Daniller. It looks very very good. With the addition of Willie Le Roux it could be more than a handful.

So I think the Bulls don’t want to give Sadie away because they know what he would be able to do at the Cheetahs.

      • If you look at the signings that Griquas have also made, the Cheetahs could be a really tough team next year. Apart from the players that did duty this year, the following players have now joined Griquas:
Luzuko Vulindlu, ex Sharks, JP Nel, Chase Minnaar ex 7′s, Jannie Boschoff, Walter Venter, Ivan Espach and Edwinn Hewitt a promising lock. Whilst at the Cheetahs Karamba Floors and Frans Viljoen are back, and Pieter Stemmet has signed as well.

Cheetahs could have a very formidable team if Juan also treturns to fitness. Something like this:

Marcel vd Merwe, Strauss and Coenie Edwin Hewitt/Ferreira and Vermeulen/Muller
Brussow, Juan and Frans Viljoen .
        van Zyl, Goosen
le Roux, Ebersohn, Sadie, Vulindlu, Daniller

On the bench we can have Nyakane/Espach, Liebenberg, and a host of loosies to choose from (Lappies, Boom, Floors, vd Walt, Downey, Minnaar, and Karemaker. Backline replacements can possibly come from Saretjie, Snyman, Strauss, Benjamin, Scheepers, Geel, and Jacobs. We need a fine 10 as back up

        • Well Griquas signings look good, I doubt Juan will ever be back and if he is back I doubt that he will be the old Juan. I like Phillip vd Walt and he would be in my super 15 team if Juan is not fit Phillip would be my nr 8 and Frans would be 7 or on the bench with lappies at 7.

Jannie Boshoff is a good player saw him at the lions he has pace and is strong a good buy and he could be a great impact man. Vulindlu has a lot of pace to burn but would need to see more of him, don’t want another Rocco Jansen.

Riaan Smit is good enough back up for Goosen, Riaan has a good boot and he can cover a lot of places (10,14,15), which is a good guy to have on the bench. Griquas also has 2 good flyhalves they bought from the bulls. Cant remember their names.

Sarel is still contracted with the Waratahs for super rugby next year. So we need another good quality scrummie

So to put in a possible team with that names

          1. Van der Merwe/Nyakane
          2. Strauss
          3. Coenie
          4. Ferreira
          5. Vermeulen/Muller
          6. HB
          7. Frans Viljoen/Lappies
          8. Phillip vd Walt/Boom
          9. Van Zyl
          10. Goosen
          11. Le Roux
          12. Ebersohn/Sadie/Strauss
          13. Sadie/Ebersohn
          14. Benjamin/Vulindlu
          15. Daniller

          16. Liebenberg, Barnes
          17. Nyakane/Vd Merwe
          18. Hewitt/Muller
          19. Frans/Boom
          20. Scrummie?
          21. Riaan Smit
          22. Jannie Boshoff/Scheepers/Snyman

  3. And now he didn’t like the Bulls’ style? Well “Booooohhhhoooooo!” bloody hell did he not consider or look at it before he went? If what Provincefan says is true (scared of the hit) he was purely hoping to earn quick bucks because that is how the Bulls play! Running into faces instead of spaces! I’ve lost a lot of respect for this chap!

    • Well we all knew he did not fit into the style, Uysh, but I agree he should just have said its a career move and not give reasons why. He is still human and we all make mistakes, he made one by going to the bulls in the first place. He has the chance to redeem himself, give him another chance if goes the same way then one can lose respect. Maybe if we were aliens or something and did not make mistakes but we are not give him the chance maybe its 3rd time lucky!

    • Well then he could regain your respect. But the jury will be out to him and he recognises that, the article on the cheetah website say he wants to focus on the fifteen man code thus he did not do the 7′s. This means he took a pay cut which means he is really trying.

He also said he wants to settle in at a union and he hopes the Cheetahs will be that place. Lets see what happens, hopefully he does settle and get in the reckoning for a starting spot!
