Just my thoughts on the weekend

Crusaders vs Chiefs

This game should be the game of the weekend, both teams are really good rounded with a lot of game breakers.

Clashes to watch out for:

Ellis vs Kerr-Barlow

Carter Vs Cruden

SBW vs Crotty

I think this battles will determine the outcome IF the Chiefs are more competitive at the scrums and lineouts. They were playing of scraps the last game and their forwards were outplayed by the Saders’. The Saders will mis Kieran Read but I think he won’t be missed too much.

The Chiefs would want to keep up with the Crusaders and don’t let them score in the opening 20min or so. We all know how dangerous the Saders are if you need to play catch up against them.

Close game could go either way, Chiefs at home but they lost their last 2 games. Saders more physical and street smart.

Saders by 3 to 7

Stormers vs Sharks

Well this will be an interesting game. I think the Stormers have been good but comes off a bye and their last two league games were dodgy to say the least.

The Sharks are in impressive form, they look hungrier everytime they go onto the pitch. The forwards does all the hard work with Bressler at the forefront and give great ball to their backline were Michalak directs play brilliantly.

I’ve been told that the following argument has nothing to stand on but here goes:

The stormers have struggled in the scrums against various teams this year (Saders, Lions, Sharks, Cheetahs to name a few) while they play against the bok front row.

The last game between the sides the Lineouts were very even and for a while the Sharks even dominated.

Kankowski vs Fourie, Kanko seems to be a lot more physical and his strength has improved drastically. Fourie should be no match form him. On the ground Fourie would compete with Bismarck and in lesser extent Marcelle Coetzee.

Kolisi vs Coetzee, Kolisi’s form has dipped a bit but since Coetzee became a bok he’s been playing like one. Still good match up but Coetzee’s offloads are very dangerous and something the stormers should watch. Kolisi on the other hand doesn’t offload much.

Daniel vs Elstadt, two different players at 7. Elstadt would probably go head to head with Alberts in the physicality department who will be playing 4. They both do more or less the same but Elstadt does not gain as much momentum as Alberts.

Alberts, Bismarck, Kanko, Coetzee etc are all very dangerous ball carriers with good hand offs. This will make the stormers defence more crucial. Add the pace of Daniel and you have a potent attack around the breakdowns and fringes.

The Stormers with Bekker, Etzebeth and Elstadt should hold off the challenge from the Sharks (Bressler, Alberts, Kanko, Daniels) at lineout time, but last time these two sides met it was a big tussle.

Bekker have the edge in all departments over bresler, and Etzebeth will be competing against Alberts in most areas.

Mcleod will have the edge on duvenhage.

Both Bash and Michalak have been consistant throughout the season. I know a lot of stormers hoping he would have a bad game because he is a frenchman, but he has been playing great rugby and I won’t bet on that.

Bosman vs JDV interesting match up, Bosman plays so inconsistant one never knows when he will be a hero but he can be. JDV should however win that battle.

JDJ vs Tim Whitehead, Whitehead should win that one, very good prospect.

Outside backs very evenly matched maybe Louis Ludick may just be found lacking against Pietersen.

All in all a good tussle awaits but the Sharks have been extremely impressive the past weeks and have peaked at the right time. The Sharks bench is way better than that of the Stormers and it could just be the difference in the end.

Sharks by 2-5

A mix of Madiba magic and South African grit & determination

Firstly congrats to the Big Easy for a great win, yesterday I was flicking between the Golf and the Cricket not knowing what to watch. Ernie looked unflapabble and really in control. I feel for Adam Scott, he did everything right but just fell short. Then the Proteas with #im (Hashim Amla) scoring a South African record of 311 not out and King Kallis supporting him all the way. Not to forget about Graeme Smiths century in his 100th match. The Proteas hit back hard after the first day and really showed the english what test cricket is all about.

Morne Morkel bowled a world class spell of fast bowling to Kevin Pietersen, the poor guy looked out of his depth against Morne. It was breathtaking to watch and it begs the question who said test cricket is boring? Our bowlers made the pitch look like one full of demons and the english much vaunted bowling attack now looks average. Even though they look average and probably are second to ours we should not underestimate them going into the next Test.

If the proteas can get rid of Bell early we could be in for an early end to the Test today but I don’t think they would be able to draw the game. Only rain can cause a no result. Proteas should keep their foot on the petrol and hammer away. Hoping that Tahir will bag some more wickets and bowl some critics quiet.

Earlier on Saturday the Bulls were knocked around by the Crusaders and they started to show their inexperience without Victor, Bakkies, Fourie etc. The Crusaders are a quality team and they would not be beaten easily in the playoffs. They dominated the game and never really got out off 5th gear, their 6th gear will be tested next week.

After that the Sharks played a great game of rugby, spreading the ball to the wings and dominating up front. Much like they did the previous week against the Cheetahs in the second half. Frankly, the Reds would not have won that game even if Quade Cooper was there. Poor Quade also made a stupid statement on twitter and I do think they are making iplayers not playing their excuse for losing.

Well for the Sharks Lambie and Steyn did not play and to me thats a bigger loss (4-5 times more of a loss) than Cooper will ever be.

Going into this Saturday, with two great derbies waiting I have no doubt that everyone will be looking forward to it. I think the Crusaders will have to play well and that the Chiefs are a better team than the Bulls but my money will stlll be on the Crusaders.

The game at Newlands will be interesting, while my money will be on the Sharks, I do feel the Stormers have what it takes to take it but the Sharks showed earlier in the season they can score tries against the Stormers defence. It is going to be a hard tough game with a lot of big hits, I can’t wait!

This weekend was truly a mix of Madiba magic and South African grit & determination.

New names for provinces and springboks

Since everyone likes to call the Free State side with brackets grey college, iv’e decided we should rename every team that has a squad with a core from one-two sides!

Here goes

Bulls wil be Wateraffies or Affiekloof

EP will be Grey PE

SWD – Outeniqua,

WP - Paarlenbosch (thanx province fan)

The rest you can name what you would like them to

O and then the biggest one of them all the

Enjoy!

Hulkrich back for good?

Friday night Marcell Coetzee had a great game and he was really impressing me a lot and he even won a few balls on the ground.

But then came the Heinrich Brüssouw show on saturday and in the wet. He was back to his old self again this weekend, maybe even better. He was a nuisence and stole ball all round, he carried the ball excellently and his defence was top notch.

Will this be enough to get himself back into the bok jersey, It should be. We really missed him a lot.

He looks more like a player that doesn’t try to steal every ball nowadays but rather wait for the right ball to lach onto and steal. He knows his game and he knows when to do what.

He played his best game of the season this week and for two weeks in a row now he has delivered.

I hope the Hulkrich will be back for good!

Thoughts after the weekend

First of All congrats to the SHARKS, STORMERS and LIONS

The Sharks played absolutely unbelievable rugby and as a Cheetah I am really scared of this weekend and that we can be in for a huge drubbing. If the Sharks can play like that I can’t see the trophy going to any other team. Brilliant. They dominated the Bulls in every aspect, with the Bulls looking at sea the whole game.

The Stormers and Cheetahs were vey even and although a lot of people saying that the stormers were dominant I don’t think so, the difference at the end was a yellow card that should not have been because Willie Le Roux was on-side when the ball was in duvenhages hand, and the goal kicking of the ever reliable Peter Grant. I really hoped for a dry game and for the Cheetahs to play Cheetah rugby, and in the end it did not happen. To the Stormers credit they were fantastic on defence and really put pressure on the Cheetahs and it payed off, but I don’t think they will be strong enough to take the trophy if they keep on like this.

Lions did fight bravely and deserved their victory, well done lions! Maybe too late but still hope you guys stay in the Super 15 with my Cheetahs.

Bulls caught off guard!

After the weekend’s game between the Cheetahs and the Bulls everyone said the Bulls made wholesale changes and that is why the Cheetahs scored their 4 tries. Many people thus trying to downplay the tries and effectively say the Bulls put their foot off the pedal.

I beg to differ.

First of all the Bulls took of Morne Steyn, Hougaard and Spies and the only really good defender out of those 3 is Hougaard. Louis Fouche is a better defender than Steyn. Wynand Olivier is the go to guy for the Bulls defence and he tackles Steyns channel a lot but is also the one that makes the calls etc.

The reason why I am saying that the tries scored was not due to the Bulls changes is due to the following. Have a look at how the tries were scored, Sias Ebersohn came on and put in deft kicks over the defensive line, that were excellently chased, which made the bulls to turn around and start scrambling in defence. No Bull player would be tall enough to stop the kicks, not even Spies, Hougaard, Steyn no matter how tall or good they are!

This kicks was not tried in the first half so the Bulls were out thought! As simple as that. A difference in game plan and excellent execution by Ebersohn and his chasers made the tries. Again no clean breaks in other words the first line of defence was there.

Give the Cheetahs credit they made the tries by changing their tactics and caught the Bulls of guard!

Just read one of the funniest comments made by a province supporter

This was the comment made from province poppies” The breeding ground cannot keep everything. That is why RSA rugby exists because of WP rugby culture, so we share with other who don’t have. There are plenty more players coming through from the WP creche moenie worry nie. Just think if WP kept all their players, there would be no opposition.”

I’d rather say without Free State and WP there would be no RSA Rugby. And if the Free State kept all their stars no one would be able to compete not even WP.

Let’s see what the other provinces can muster, I believe WP will come close but second!
