As I’m following the test match between the Proteas and Sri Lanka on the cricinfo website, one thing is becoming more and more certain for me as victory for the Lankas is edging closer and closer with every wicket we’re losing: HEADS MUST ROLL!!
The sad thing is that the winner of the 3rd and final test will win the series and I doubt that the selection panel will have the balls to make drastic changes. The return of rookie sensation and hometown hero, Vernon Philander will be a boost for the squad but our batting at the moment is a far bigger concern than our bowling. With the return of Philander, it will be interesting to see if Marchant de Lange will be given another opportunity to play in place of the under performing Morkel & Tahir. Mind you, the former did pick up his game a bit in this test match. We haven’t had an all out seam attack in a while so I would love to see how that would work out but back to the batting.
Of the 4 batsmen struggling with form (Biff, Rudolph, Kallis & Prince) Smith and Kallis will probably keep their places in the first 11 but Rudolph and Prince MUST BE DROPPED!! I do feel for Rudolph as he played very well prior to getting back into squad, selectors couldn’t ignore him anymore and had no choice but to pick him for the Ozzie series. But with 5 – 7 innings so far without even a 50 behind his name is totally unacceptable for an opening batsman. Prince on the other hand has been hailed as the one of the guys who usually got SA out of a spot of bother but now it looks like he’s hellbent on doing the total opposite. I think he should be proud that he’s averaging over 40 in tests and he did his country proud on a number of occasions but I’m afraid his time is up.
We’ve given 3 bowlers an opportunity to show us what they can offer us (even though the jury I think is still out on Tahir) why can’t we do the same with more batsmen???? Guys like Petersen, Elgar, Rossouw, JP, Faf, Ingram have been playing very well in domestic competitions and atleast 2 of them deserve not only a call up to the test squad but to play as well. I like what I’ve seen from Elgar & Rillee so far and would love to see the 2 of them being pulled closer as they have youth on their side.
I know that cricket is a team sport and that you win and lose as a team but it’s also more of an individual-team sport than say, rugby or soccer and because of that it should be easier to pull out those individuals that are not performing. We are nothing but delusional if we can’t see that our top 6 isn’t performing and I didn’t even want to mention Boucher coz it looks like powers in CSA have already decided that they’ll only drop him once they do the same to buddy o pal Jacques. And to a certain extend I’m fine with that coz a keeper struggling to score runs isn’t our biggest problem at the moment. BATSMEN NOT SCORING RUNS IS!!!
